Water + engine = Problems.

  Toyota MR2
Well after 2 months in my garage it had all rusted tiny shards of metal from when i cleaned the engine previously. so I gave it a quick rinse down and now it just splutters and splutters on tick over. and almost cuts out.

You rinised the engine?? wtf.....water in the plug wells? if your gonna steam clean or rinse your engine you should cover all electrics etc, but imo its asking for trouble anyway.

Engine bays are supposed to be dirty!!

I wouldn't take them out because if there's any water around them it'll run into the engine ;) Just leave it running for a bit see if it dries out :)

I did this when I first got the car. It'll be water down the plug holes. As above never hose a Renault engine!!

as others have said, really does sound like water in the plug holes.

  Looking for a ph1 172
Yeah mine had the same and it was water in the plug holes. i just tried to dry them out with a bit of paper towel (with the plugs still in) and it eventually dried out and was fine afterwards.

doesent sound serious but DONT take out the spark plugs as you'll just get water in the bores that'll run down into your oil and won't be fun. remove the HT leads and have a look for water and dry it out as best you can.

It happened to me the other day after an engine wash :) .I coundn't help myself..the muck that built up over the years was just too much to bear.

Found plug no.3 to be wet and a little carbonised so changed it for a cleaned up plug and it was fine.

  Whichever has fuel
Pull plugs out, soak in WD40, replace.

Then remember not to soak your engine bay with a hosepipe you lunatic.

Why do you only find these threads AFTER you fall foul of the same thing. :tired:

Decided to clean engine bay today and rinsed off. Exact same symptoms now. Yes, I know I'm an idiot. Hoping it will dry out and resolve itself :grimacing:

Warning to others!

Still running like a powerboat this morning. It's not had a lot of water but clearly enough to do this.

Should I run it and try to dry out or take the the garage?

Take the ignition leads off mate. have a look down the plug hole and see if you can see any water. DONT remove the plugs because if there is water down the plug holes it will just fall into the cylinder!

If there is water down the plug holes then turn car off and blow it out with an air line or try and dry it best you can with paper towell.

Then when you've dried it as best you can leave it running for a while to try and dry it off fully.

I really really don't understand why anyone would put water on an engine. Literally asking for trouble.

Yeah. I now agree, never done it before and never will again!

Thanks for that, will have a look and see if that can speed the process up.

Turn the car upside down so it can drain out and put in a bowl of dry rice.

Checking for bowls just now. Does it matter what kind of rice? Pilau?
