Weird rattle

Hello all,

My 172 Cup has an annoying rattle that's only audible from the drivers seat. It...

• changes pitch with engine speed
• seems to get worse as the engine warms up (though that might be my imagination)
• seems to come from the instrument area, but
• isn't audible with the windows down
• isn't audible if I stick my head under the bonnet and get someone to rev the engine
• sounds a bit like the heater fan in my 205 GTi (i.e. knackered)
• sounds a bit like a knackered speedo cable (but it doesn't have one and the noise changes with engine speed, not road speed)
• isn't the heater fan
• isn't audible from the passenger seat
• seems to come and go as I move around to try to find it.

It sounds almost like a typical French plastic trim rattle, but the longer I have the car the more I think it's something more serious.

Any ideas?!
