Wet Sanding

  Fiesta ST-2 Finsport
I recognise it, Chris. Sadly not. I dabbled in semi-Pro for a few years in the same way that Russ@MCC started off, i.e. all the gear and the right idea/insured/weekends. Full time role and moving to London kicked that into touch :dapprove:

Fair play mate, you obviously still dable a bit then! ;)

These are pig tails btw, incase anyone was wondering what they actually are. Frequently found on Aston's, like this DBS..

But they do come out, without any sanding (as that's what causes them, sanding by DA)

Yeah Astons always come from the factory like this. I do a fair bit for an AM dealer. This is the downside to DA sanding, flat block sanding is normally always the best option and won't suffer pig talis. You shouldn't jump straight for g3 (if ever!!) as its probably far too abrasive!

Are you doing this outside or indoors?

You can't assume that you need 1500 grade, you may need to start at 1200 or even 2000, it depends on the hardness of the clearcoat and the depth of the peel.

Anyone can wet sand in reality, its not difficult. The issue is inflicting scorelines and removing only what you need to. You can't learn this from the Internet.

If you're contemplating doing it outdoors, at this time of year, then you should seriously reconsider. If you're doing it indoors, then make sure its a very clean environment

Also, I'd budget a good 60 hours or so for a decent job. You will find the underlying clearcoat a bit softer so the filling from any compounding will be a lot more evident. Check your correction work thoroughly with panel wipe ideally (used safely!) else you'll be in for a surprise after a few washes!

Cheers all :)

Russ it's being done in my unit, I would die doing it outside lol

I got the car back last night, right fucked up state and I put about 6hours work in last night.

ill put the pics up in a sec but it's bloody awful.

starte off with 200grit and after an hour I looked no different, went down to 1500 (sorry gally:( ) and it started fairly well, only did a third of te bonnet, it still needs more work but I will crack on. I tried 2000 to get te sanding marks out a d succeeded then used wolfs 1000grit compound 5pn iirc and it brought it up a treat.

It will come out ok IMO but as Russ says, a lot of hours!

You brave f**ker. Looking forward to seeing it Ant.

I wish I was being brave dude but atm this is just to correct this painters f**k up as the car looks f**king ridiculous, trying to align te wing last night and realising that he's lost most of the bolts I ended up just sitting on the floor shaking with rage.

i am seriously not happy, glad I haven't paid him.

Ant, I have a car nuts and bolts pot, and you've got about 900 bolts, we'll start on getting it back to top shape next week. 100%.

I'm no pro but it looks to me that lacquer's gone on far to high pressure/too close.

After many many hours wet sanding the bonnet I'm finally happy with it, kinda. Only a few more panels to go. I enjoy it actually.
