What causes play in steering?

as above,
there is abit of play in the steering when im driving, just wondered if anyone knows about this, and if it needs to get seen to?

what car mate? cold be just worn track rod ends etc (cheap to fix) but my car needs a steering rack on a 52 plate 172!!! the joys of warranty!

its a mk 1

Of course it needs looking at!
It could be all manner of things, worn steering rack, worn out track rod ends, worn wishbone bushes, worn top mounts etc etc.

On a Mk1, usually steering column.. (16v/Williams defo)

Do you mean that you turn the wheel a bit and nothing happens? That usually means steering column on mk1s!
