What is the 5k kick ?

  Monaco 172
Recently got my 172 and after looking through this forum iv noticed people talking about the 5k kick, what is it?

Its not that big tbh, its amusing, but not as good as a turbo kicking in.

I prefer the build up from 4k to about 5.5k as thats when things start to get fun. Anything after 5k your ears start to bleed imo.

Lies. Don't listen to them.

Rev to 5000rpm and a big foot comes out of the dash and kicks you in the face.

Is the kick more pronounced in the 1*2s compared to the 197s or am I just numb to it because I have a turbo motor aswell?

it's the often touted V-tec Y0! like kick experienced from the masses of extra power you get at 5k as the turbo, charger and nos all fire simultaneously... or, it's the imagination and placebo affect of the engine making a bit more noise and getting "slightly" more urgent often exagerated by owners... basically it's nothing, the car gets louder and memories of F&F come flooding back.

I think the 197 comes on cam earlier and therefore you don't notice it kick as much. Sure someone will confirm.

Its more of an increase in urgency of the accelleration as the cams come into their most optimum breathing range in the rev band. Kick is a good term if your used to being kicked by toddlers

lol, we settling on gentle push instead then?

My mates 300+bhp Scooby kicks and you get a deffinite shove as the power comes in... maybe I'm just not used to normal Clio's, but I didn't really notice anything at all, I had to watch the needle to notice it was reving more freely.

The last time I got the 5k kick the road ahead went all blurry, then my laptop told me I had manifold trouble, then all the rivets popped out of the floorpan and broke off. Thank f**k I had a double shot of NOS to get me home.....

Can feel a little something in mine, makes a bit more noise and revs more freely after 5k. Definatley not something you can even slightly compare to the 'kick' you get from a modded/agressively mapped turbo motor.

Just too ad that when you do take the car to 5k & over it'll probably sound ike it's about to fall apart (well my dads standard 172 sounds like that lol) Sounds cack tbh.

Mine sounds better for sure, induction noise doubles and nothing sounds any different to driving below 5k, ie no shakes, rattles odd noises etc.

lmfao:lolup: not bad

I've been in a 182, and i've test driven a 172 Cup, and i defo felt the 5k 'kick'. Nothing like a turbo (like my mother in laws WR1) but simular to a vtec imo.

You cant compare it to a turbo cos a turbo is a far more aggressive way of delivering power , thats probably why you dont feel it in the clio as much cos it doesnt compare to a turbo .

I find that if the road's greasy and the previous owner fitted ninja death rubber that you havn't got 'round to replacing yet you get a little tug of torque steer as the needle passes 5k. And I think it sounds awesome above the "kick" with a nice stainless fitted. Better than my mates horrible farty Blitz Nur-Spec. Just wish I could get the same amount of induction noise he gets off his Jap rocket...

The 197s don't have it, their power delivery is linear, flat all the way. That's why people say they aren't as quick, because they don't feel quick.

The 'kick' in mine at 5k is enough to spin the wheels up in third in the wet i.e. quite noticeable :approve:

the 5k kick is when paula radcliffe has finished crappin by the roadside and has to catch the leaders up again

The 5K kick is experienced (mentally I think) by 172/182 Civic Type R Vtec wannabees....but in fact is nothing like the engine characterisitcs of a Honda V-Tec....

in my car it is at the point i like to call "ZENITH"...the point where the revs are climbing nicely.....and the f**king fuel gage is going in the opposite direction.....!

This is a back to back graph from RS Tuning. Look at the torque line on the standard car and you can see a steep increase of torque at approx 5k rpm. Thats the 5k kick.

I think it depends what your used to. For alot of us Meir mortals the kick is definitely there and I for one love it:approve:

My experience in my Clio:

There's definitely a kick at c. 5000rpm. It's not my imagination. It's similar to iVTEC but not as obvious, and the willingness to rev tails off after 6500, where the iVTECs will happily spin to 8500+ and bounce off the limiter all day while feeling like it could rev to 10000 (and probably could).

So, while making Hondas engines look like something made by aliens, the Clio 2.0 does kick quite noticeably at 5k. Well, mine does anyway, so ner :D
