What oil for 172/Cup

Getting conflicting advice from dealers.............one says 10w 40 semi-synthetic, another said 15w 40, yet theres a footnote in the service manual clearly stating "use only 5w 40 for V6 and 2.0l 16v RSport engines"

What is it then.........I was assuming it should be fully synthetic, but I dont know what the car is supplied with (nor does the dealer) and I dont want to mix oils of a different spec.

Its done a little over 3k and used a bit............guess this is normal. Does it settle down once run in or do they generally use a little and require top ups between services (I appreciate that every engine is different and it may depend how you drive it) ?

Cheers.

found a lengthy thread on oil, but peeps still seem to be questioning whether it comes with 10w 40 semi-synth from the factory or whether its a 5w 40 fully synth as stated in the manual.

ill change it at 6k (surely 12k is too long), but need a top up in the meantime and want a match for what the car came with.

0W50 mobil does NOT excist (at least its not in the catalgue) 0W40 is.

The Renault manual states 10W40 preferable 5W40. (also for V6)

From factory they have 10W40 with a special additive I was told.

We use 5W50 for racing

So the option mobil 1 5W40 will do perfect for your 2.0

First service is at .....10.000 miles. I rather drive 5000 with stock renault (run in, which is actualy not) oil and change the next 5000 for full synth. and then every 7500 mls fresh liquid juice of full synth.

I put in Magnatec 10w / 40 when I top it up and ive done approx 27K now, if you go to Renault and ask for some theyll give you Elf 10 / 40. Putting fully Synthetic in is probably the most ideal once its run in, but not essential. Semi synth is perfectly up to the job IMO.

  172, Tiguan

Tony, just thought id wait untill 12,000 (first service) because in my opinion fully synthetics are too good nowadays and allow no wear.

Well I just provide the info what we do on the track with the race clios. We drive in with stock oil from Renault (that is a whole day trackdrive not higher than 6000 Rpms) end of the day we have around 1000 miles. Than we put in Elf Excellium 5W50 full synth. raceoil also provided to us by RenaultSport. Again one day but now the revs may very form idle to 6500 Rpms. A lot of changes in revs I mean with this. Again around 1000 miles. Than the engine is run in and we put new 5W50 in and wait till raceday 1 (changing oil once every raceweekend). There is a little tag when you get a new blueprinted engine from Renault (all our engines are sealed) which says the same as I just did.....

But of course everybody is free what they want to do, but since 2000 (8 races with around 45 cars for three years) I believe the Dutch Cliocup only had like 3 engineblows that I know of.

Apparently Renault UK state that a 5w oil is too thin for a 172/Cup???

  Embarrassed to say

I topped up with castrol magnatec a month ago hope thats okay for the cup. At the 10k service going to change the oil to mobil 1 rs.

well Renault UK are a bunch of a holes I would say. State !

Please do visit your local Renault Dealer they have a very big wallpaper in their garage which tells you that e.g. 5W40 is on the list as recommended by Renault France.

And if you check your maintainance book(I just did dig up mine) it´s says (at least here) all European countries preferable 0W30, 5W40 or 5W50.

Rich D why is Renaultsport providing us EVERY race with 5 cans (1l each) per car of 5W50 Elf Excellium than if it was too thin ? (yes we are provided by Rsport holland for ALL lubrication and fuel from Elf) ;)

I would have thought its feasible that a car that spends a lot of time Racing ie thrashing the nads off it for prolonged periods, is deemed to need fully synth (better) oil. And for a road car - Semi synth is perfectly up to the job?

yes I don´t get your point CUP80Y isn´t that where 172/cup/RS etc. are for it´s printed SPORT on the back.

I´m only kiddin´ youre probably right for normal road use 10W40 will do (but still I myself go for full synth.)
