whats clio 172 ownership like

right,

this mainly applys to mk1 owners , after seeing a sunflower yellow one each day on the way to work (anyone off here , hayes bypass?) i thinking baout getting one for a main car and havin the 5 as a weekend use car limited mileage.

Im thinking of buying a yellow mk1 though, i could be tempted to a cup but i prefer the interior of the mk1 its much classier IMO plus mk1s are cheaper , can you tell me whats ownership like, it would be an everyday car, is it easy to live with i mean i used to renaults ive owned a five for nearly 3 years and i can forgive it ALL its faults because its such a awesome car, it has character it really does.

Also what should i be paying for a newish one x reg or something with low ish mileage(should be low anyway)

you wont regret it, Ive moved from the RS clan, had an escort RST before and Im glad I made the move you have all the performance of such cars, but with no worries of over heating, melting pistons etc....

Im really happy with the cup even if it did cost a few notes. And it eats all the old competition for breaky!!

Having owned mk1 & mk2, here are my thoughts on this:

Sunflower yellow - seen Kathys and saw one in Sheffield last night. Yes nice, very, very uncommon. Ive seen 2 Exclusives in a fortnight. Only 2 yellow ones in over 2 years of looking out for them.

I prefer the MK2 172 interior from an aesthetic point of view, but prefer those white dials with RENAULTSPORT on them in the mk1. Both dashboards rattle and resonate as much as each other.

However, if you are able to forgive a Renaults faults, you will love the 172 to pieces. It looks cool, it sounds cool, its always fun when you hit the important pedal. The brakes are astounding. Ive driven loads of other mordern cars and NONE of their brakes match the 172s for feel and power. I got matt4478 to brake hard from 100mph in his 172 with me in the passenger seat. I was shocked at the force which which the car stops. It leaves you hanging forward in your seatbelt.

And dont worry about reports of flabby handling on the mk1 172s. Its true that the standard set up lets it down, but it can be cured and vastly improved for £150.

We paid just under £8k for our 23000 mile W reg. Its not let us down yet, but does rattle like f**k. It does spoil it a bit to be honest, having to push bits of trim back on all the time. But then again, its a Renault, which has never really said "quality plastics and solid interiors", has it?

i could be tempted to a cup though, and with my gearchange i reckon id do it justice, many people say that driven well a cup is a very strong match for a hell of a lot of cars.

i know the cups not as rare, but to be honest since its release ive seen 3 in slough and sloughs not exactly small LOL in fact ive only ever seen 5 LOL,

have to be THAT mondial blue though, hmm blue or yellow, sh*t hot setup or not so good.

and i know what your saying about those dials, and to be that gearknob i love the mk1 gearknob that white ball :) dilemma!

buy one m8 you wont regret it. Cups are ok but for the difference in money (as low as a grand if you know where to look) its mad not to go for the 172. Then again it depends what you want out of the car. I went for the fancy seats and sacrificed a marginal performance difference. Not that it would be much of an issue but I think 172 residuals will be higher over the cup as cups might be seen as pure "boy racer" thrashed motors and the 172 might enjoy a better image in years to come. Either way you need to get one ;)
