What's going on with my brakes ?!

  clio 172cup
I've never known a car to eat so many discs and pads I'm starting to think there's an under lying issue !

when I bought the car after a while I replaced all discs and pads and both rear bearings , after a while the rear bearing went again ( probably because they were cheap ) but also that rear caliper was buggered so again replaced that and both rear discs and pads again !!!

On my last mot it failed on unbalanced front brakes and it was shaking under braking so again it had a set of pads n discs on the front and this cured the problem but now like four months down the line it's doing it again !!! Wobbling under braking although sometimes there is a slight wobble anyway surely I can't have warped 2 sets of discs in a year ??! The back brakes don't seem to be wearing all that even either :(

i had the car tracked and the wheels balanced a while ago and replaced the lower ball joints and track rods

is there something that could be causing all this ?? I don't find it normal for it to keep eating discs specially when I was so cautious about bedding them in , I have noticed a bit more noise also but not sure if its just road noise or something else ! None of the wheels are suspiciously hot after driving either

please help lol I'm losing the will with this car big time problem car is an understatement

What's the condition of the calipers? Especially the fronts, it's the sliders that cause the the imbalance.

Could be sticky callipers as said.

Did you refit the little spacer/washers that should be present behind rear discs. These missing will cause the rear bearings to fail prematurely and also not torque-ing the rear hub nut to the correct 175nm

No haven't actually really checked the front calipers , but it something was sticking wouldn't the wheel be getting hot ? Or is that not necessarily the case ?

And yes little rings were put back and the nuts were tourqued right as I looked it up specially ! I'm getting to the point of just wanting to replace discs pads and calipers all round just to put a stop to all this nonsense ! but that won't come cheap

I got a full set of calipers for £30 from a scrappy. Probably the easiest way mate.

Probably going to be the way forward for me I reckon ! Need it sorted tbh as it hardly makes for an enjoyable drive specially when you want to give it some beans

^ Yes mate

Couple of Traders on here break Clios and I'm sure they'll have some calipers in stock or look in the for sale section on here. If you become a member you will be able to access full site. It will pay for itself in no time :)

Still having this issue ! At then end of my tether with it now :headno:...........had the calipers checked out and everything was moving freely as it should be all dust seals were fine etc , also none of the wheels were getting hot after driving , and the brakes were not wearing unevenly at all on the front.

Cant help but think there is something else causing this issue ...im now on my 3rd set of front pads and discs since owning the car and have been so so cautious about bedding the last 2 sets in . Also changed the passenger side bearing and hub as a precaution , as thought it could of been out of shape slightly , but this didn't help .

when the pads are changed the vibration almost goes completely but is still there some what.

The wobble is considerably worse when I first set off and the car is cold , but as the car warms up it improves slightly , but can still be felt when driving as well as when braking ( the wobble when braking is only just starting to get bad again)

another thing to note is occasionally I here some quiet clonking when im slowly moving , and I had lost some cv grease a while back , but we replaced it and filled the hole in.

as mentioned before all track rods and ball joints were replaced 18months ago. All wheels were balanced when I had the wheels refurbed 6 months ago and tracking was done when the track rods were changed.

pretty sure that's all I can think of ??? stupid car has had sooooo much money thrown at it and im really not enjoying owning it at the moment ....please some one give me some answers lol or im trading it in for a Nissan micra ...JOKES

Haven't got 'excessive' play in the rack have you? Could be s cause of the wobble you speak of?

I'm not sure ? That's something I hadn't checked , just seems to be so many things that could cause it , and process of elimination can be expensive :(

Sorry for my igronance but is there much point buying second hand calipers? As this is a common problem with clios arnt the chances of it happening to the second hand calipers the same ?

only reason I ask is I think my rears are sticking too
thanks

It's quite common yes mate, more so on your 172 Cup aswel due to them being quite heavily biased towards the front brakes

You could do a DIY refurb/paint etc on the second hand calipers while still having use of your car, would be one of the reasons people do it. Obviously aswel as been cheaper than a new caliper from Renault

You can also buy refurb'd calipers and then just sell your current ones on to recoup some money.

Depends how bad yours are ATM and if you want to paint them, a strip down and inspection with a clean etc may sort them.

I see what you mean ATM my handbrake Is sticking on overnight (only when I park downhill) I'm not bothered about paint etc and money is a bit tight so I think I will give them a clean up at the weekend and see if this resolves the issue

Thanks
