Whats gone wrong with your 172/182/197 since Ownership ??

Hey All !!

Wanted to start a thread about faults and remedies people have had with there cars since ownership !

Could go something like :-

1 ( Fault )
1a ( Remedy) - personal fix / warranty / cost maybe ?

2 ( Fault )
2a ( Remedy ) - Keep going the more faults / fixes you've had

Would be interesting to see how many people have the same fault and what was done about it

I'll start

182 04'

1 - Cambelt Failure @ 20,000 miles
1a - New engine supplied and fitted by Renault - 6 weeks without car and no courtesy car

2 - Knocking from under car
2a - Turns out when new engine was fitted the sub frame wasnt properly installed !

3 - Knocking from top shock mounts
3a - Top shock mounts replaced by renault under warranty - 5 days to replace

4 - HT leads failure
4a - £260 for a set of leads ( was before i realised that Renault bum fcuk us )

5 - Catalytic Converter failed
5a - £250 for new cat from local garage / fitted myself

6 - Intermittant fault with brake position sensor
6a - This is ongoing but will be replaced in 1 week hopefully not expensive

7 - Leaky washer jet (o/s)
7a - Replaced under warranty but still leakes ! Cant be bothered to change now

197 Cup
6 Months (from new)

1. Squeaking Recaro
1a. Went into Renault, they used £20 worth of fuel leving it running most of the day, took the seat out, put it back in and claimed the problem was fixed
1b. Squeak came back, moved seat forward one click on the slider, squeak went away and hasn't come back in 5 months

2. Suspected rusting boot lid.
2a. Going to Renault Approved bodyshop Monday to confirm suspicions and book in for work under Warranty.

  VW Golf GTD
my 172, bought on 44k, sold on 77k 18 months later at 6 years old

In no order it had
Clutch cable
4 new dampers (2 failed)
Massive coolant hose started to leak.
TDC sensor failed.
3rd gear syncro went
new box put in (supplied buy renault)
new box failed to, so replaced again
Rear bearings failed
exhaust hanger
Depahser pulley decided to break meaning head of new valves etc.

Defo is more that i can't remember.


182, bought on 12k at 3.5 years old

now on 23k and is 4 years old

Leaking washer jets.
Just uplugged the motor and blocked the pipes
 
1 - Broke down in plumes of smoke and soot when virtually new.
1a - Water temp guage made ECU flood the engine with petrol. Wiring fixed up. Warranty.

2 - Exhaust fell off after 12,000 miles.
2a - Welds around the CAT were split. New CAT. Warranty.

3 - Lights on dash. No cruise control.
3a - Brake pedal switch. Warranty.

4 - Emissions warning light comes on at least once a year.
4a - Still does it.

5 - It rattles so much it feels like a biscuit tin.
5a - It's a Renault.

EDIT: A few other problems, including a split ECU bracket, melted steering wheel. Just the usual 'wear & tear' roffles.

1a-after 3 trips to renault they replaced the strut top bearing and problem solved.(warrany)

  Renault Clio 172 Ph2
182 - had for 10k miles (10k total), nothing went wrong
172 ph1 - had for 12k miles, (45k total) nothing went wrong
197 - had for 8k miles, (11k total) nothing went wrong
172 ph2 - 6k miles (41k total) so far and nothings gone wrong

I have found that service part items, such as brakes and exhausts have been quite £££ though!

1.window regulator...

2. battery went dead.....but that was my fault.....

3. errrr thats it owned since ....sept

touch wood, my cup is preeety reliable......for now

Bought standard 182 6th jan 2009 52,000 miles

1.Slipping out of second gear
1a Had taken out 1 years extra cover for £159 so done under this but took 3 WEEKS

2.If ABS turns on every damned light on the dash light up and stays on
2a Ongoing may still be done under same cover.:cool:

Quite a few faults coming up more than once i suspect ! Could forward this to Renault UK after its been rammed to death with faults ? Kick em up a notch. When i had my new engine fitted was told i was gonna be sent a £50 voucher for my expenses over 6 weeks of public transport....

Yep you guessed could only be spent at renault and it never turned up lmao !

2003 172 bought on 21k now on 48k 2 years later...

1.driveshaft gone
1a driveshaft replaced!

2. Handbrake Cables (yes both within a week) snapped causing mot fail
2a renault had none and couldnt get any for 2 months, no scrappys had them, motor factors said they had them in stock but any time they came didnt bloddy fit (non RS ones) eventually got them replaced!

3. Upstream lambda sensor went, 24k miles, standard car at the time
3a refused under warranty, eventually paid quite a bit for the part and done it myself

4. Standard backbox number 2 fell off (had been replaced by previous owner at 18k) was on abut 25k at the time lol
4a K-tec stealth fitted!

07 plate R27, nearly two years old, 18.5k in and not one single fault, tho its now needing front pads, will be due its two year/24k service and new front tyres around July time.

So much better than both my old MK2's, dynmamique and 182 sport.

Just as I picked the car up and got it home it started to run on three cylinders due to the car cleaners jet spraying the engine.

Took off the inlet, took out the spark plugs soaked up the water inside the hole's and hey presto... Smooth ever since ;)

EDIT: Owned for nearly 2months now

172 52plate

1. exhaust blowing
replaced with complete new aftermarket system
2. head gasket went
replaced by k-tec
3. o/s driveshaft split
replaced myself
4. missfire
replaced plugs, leads with magnacor, new coil pack and missfire is still present going to try new air/fuel sensor.
5. knocking from front suspension
top mounts- common problem
6. heater packed up
found the resistor pack had blown
7. trip computer kept reseting everytime i started her up
battery was knackered
 
have replaced odds and sods which have a finite service life and you'd expect to have to replace at some time (although some of this stuff has been needed at an early age/mileage imo) - engine mounts (rubbish), top mounts (rubbish), battery, rear damper (leaking), exhaust/mountings

then, things that i'd have considered failures would include - gearbox (prev owner ran it low on oil; it seized), steering rack (PAS fluid seal failure)

don't think mine's been too unreliable since having been through it. seem to be a number of common failure points that may or may not descend - bit of a lottery; depends how car's used/maintained i guess

52 plate Mk2 172 now on over 101,000 miles.

Both driveshafts replaced
Alternator
New battery
Replaced leaking headlight washers about 5 times
Replaced exhaust as the OEM fell off
Replaced temp sensor
Replaced washer pump
And all of the big services 72k etc.


All in all I'm pretty impressed still on the original gearbox, clutch, and the steering wheel is still in very good condition.

Fletch yours really has done well... Looking at my jam jar and its list of faults im not expecting the 100,000 marker lol but hey you never know

Guess I've been pretty lucky then as I had the 182 3 years and I've had the V6 for 1year and nothing went wrong *touch wood*

Apart from that it's been 7 months of utter fun and enjoyment.

1.burst radiator and coolant pipes...replaced at local garage 100k
2.knackered battery at 102k
3.mot due this month,had pre mot check and needs the following
new discs and pads all round
new front tyres
new front dampers..both leaking
new top mounts
new handbrake cables..

All to be done at boxer motor company in maidenhead(renault specialist)

Bloody hell from reading some of these mines been a saint.

Had it over 5 years...

1. Bearing on timing belt

Had new belt fitted

2. Back box fell off

Had stainless system fitted

Thats it!

Had my 182 since Oct 07 and not had any problems at all except having to replace a tyre!!
 
  Renaultsport Clio 197
1.boot lock rattle (fixed)
2.steering rack tightened or something like that
3.sunroof rattling a bit when open (not fixed)
4.dash lights going of randomly (can't be fixed)
5.replaced injectors (just one)
6.hood not aligned with the front bumper (the bit where the grill is) -fixed..ish

hm...will remember more surely

  A thirsty 172
53 plate 172. Purchased May 2008 with 48k on the clock. Full dealer service history and all the belts done for the second time.
Hit 60k on Friday morning on the way to work. The car came with receipts for work done to it before I owned it. Here's what was listed:

1. Faulty wiper motor. Replaced under warranty.
2. Standard exhaust failed. Replaced with another standard exhaust by previous owner. Looks like Renault charged £400 for it!

Since I have owned it (in no particular order):

3. Standard exhaust gave up again. It developed holes in 3 places (2 on the back box, one on the centre pipe). It has been replaced with a recessed Supersport system from K-Tec.
3a. Rear exhaust hanger was replaced at the same time because the rubber had perished.
4. Heater resistor failed causing the blowers to stop working. Replaced by Renault under warranty.
5. One of the air conditioning pipes split, causing all the refrigerant to escape. Replaced by Renault under warranty.
6. N/S rear coil spring snapped. Replaced all 4 springs with a set of Eibach Sportlines. Plan on getting coilovers soon though.
7. N/S front Xenon headlight let water in and caused the light (and side light) to stop working. Replaced by Renault under warranty.
8. Bonnet catch was replaced under warranty, although it never actually caused me a problem.

In the time I've had it I've eaten 2 sets of front tyres, a set of front brake pads and about £2.5k worth of petrol!
It's also had an oil and filter change about 5,000 miles ago and will be due a service in the next month or two. It sees 7,000rpm+ on a daily basis and seems quicker now than it did when I got it.

I used to have a 106 GTi and I had probably 10 times as many problems with it over the course of ownership.
 
you lot are unlucky f*****s really..
Had mine new since 2002... Apart from a driveshaft that was replaced under warranty (although prob due to my coilovers)....
NOTHING has gone wrong with it that I can remember.
coming on 7 years hassle free motoring. :D

in the 3 years iv had my 182 only the door lock went in the 1st year which was fixed by warranty,
 
  Arctic 182FF
04 plate 182 now coming up for 34k owned for 3 years

1: Failed first MOT - hazard light switch, emissions and front discs corroded
1a: New switch and lamda sensor (warranty) and new front discs (£££s)

2: CV Boot clip broken/missing
2b: Boot refilled with grease and new clip.

Cruise control works when it feels like it, probably the brake switch thingy, but dont use it often so. the usual little rattles and steering wheel rubber fail.

Bought mine Jan 2008 with 44k on the clock. Done 23k since then and had heaps of stuff replaced lol.

Exhaust broke.

Washer jets failed.

Rear shocks leaking.

Engine ran out of oil, new engine fitted.

On top of that had all the usual wear and tear items. Brake pads, tires, belts, clutch, engine mounts.

Must have spent about £3000 + in the last year just keeping the damn thing on the road, when it works though its a hoot to drive so don't really care tbh.
