What's this part?

  BMW M5 & E36
Apolgies for asking what probably is a very obvious question, but I'm not sure...

The part labelled with the red X in the picture below, what is it and what does it do?! I'm aware that the panel filter is in the part behind it, just lost as to what this does?! :clown:

2001 1.4 16v if it matters.

I was assuming the part which contained the filter was the airbox, maybe not. Is there another filter in this too then?

Doesnt look like it can be opened.

I'll try again, a wee bit more confused now!

Whats what here then?!

The filter is in part 'Y', can just see the orange edge of it. What does the airbox/part 'x' achieve? Dont know whats inside as they dont open.

Its a silencer, taking it off massivley increase intake noise, but also massivley increase hot air drawn into engine

So it does nothing but silence the intake noise? So if i was to take it out i would get more noise, correct?

And to keep the warm air intake down the best thing to do would be to extend the cold air feed along to the back of the filter?

nah, filter is defo in X.... y is just a small chamber and thats a gasket type thing your talking about (the orange bit)

do i have to go look at the bits i took off ma car to find out! ? lol (in the attic)

Correct, x is just an empty resonater box to keep the intake noise down, take it off and put some big cold air piping in and it'll roar!

Y is the airfilter housing. Shite design it is too!

Cheers John, just what I was looking for :). Would you extend the current air feed or start a fresh?

Also would i notice any difference at all in replacing the OE filter with a K&N (as an example) panel filter? Dont mean the induction kit.

Though this thread had my name all over it. Yup take it off and go for a drive without any ducting it'll heat soak like mad but the noise will be all the same. K&N panel filter and it only gets noisyer.

The actual airbox assembly at the back has a resonator chamber in the bottom of it too i've since replaced the lot with this:

Not convinced theres any (noticable anyway) difference tbh, its certainly a lot more free revving over the standard setup but power wise I don't think theres any dicernable difference. A few dyno runs with the various setups on would be the only surefire way of testing it.

I only ever set out to create noise anyway, I was under no illusions that i'd gain any power. Although maybe it has slightly and I just haven't noticed through not looking.

simota looks neat, how much did u pay? where from?

Got it secondhand of harry_manback when he sold his 1.4 only payed £40 for it. Tenner on a K&N cleaning kit and it was as good as new.

The only place i've seen selling them is dp motorsport and they want £150 for one on their site which I wasn't going to pay, they did sell them on ebay for £89 a while ago but I haven't seen one on there in a while mind.

I did that, went for a drive to B&Q, picked up some nice 100mm alu piping for a fiver and fitted it :rasp:

Result (poor quality phone pics):

Not the neatest effort ever, but it sounds better!
