when dephaser is knackered is it a constent tappy noise or not?

  Astra H vxr
hey people just what title says really, having a bit off trouble identifing a strange knocking/ticking noise? goes with the car when revved , when idle is a ticking type off noise :( but its not a constent noise as it sometimes aint there ? could this be the dephaser ? as heard there very common to break on the clios ? thanks adam,

If the rattly noise is your dephaser it will disappear after approx 2000 rpm. When the car is idling it'll sound a bit like a diesel or a traktor in my case (depends how shagged it is). Can't remember the exact reason but basically the dephaser/variable valve timing pulley makes the car less 'raw' at lower revs (so it doesn't sound like a rally car pootling round town) and 'switches over' at around 2k rpm which is why the rattly sound goes. I'm sure someone who knows what they are on about can explain a lot better than I have.

As I understand it it's very rare that a dephaser 'lets go' and some people live with the noise for quite some time. But if you are unlucky and your dephaser does go then I think it's pretty much the same as the cambelt snapping - very expensive. So your best bet is to get it done. Because of the work involved a new pulley effectively means a new set of belts.

ahh cheers for the video, um mine aint that loud :O and tbh doesnt sound the same, but that could be mine just starting to get knackered, it may be best if i do take it to a renault specialist, so i can be double sure, as oviously there is something ticking/clicking, i cant really hear it when ive popped my head in the bottom as much its more noticeable in the car :/ its getting a little more consistent now but still aint always there :O if it is that il will get it sorted though as when it comes to cars i dont like it when something is wrong il just have to pay :( to get it sorted :( , but that engine in that video does really sound bad  i wouldnt evan attempt to drive my car if it sounded like that lol , cheers for the replys peoples :)

the first link is the dephaser, the second one is something far far worse. Bought my car with the dephaser already borked and until a specialist pointed out that while it is French it shouldn't sound quite so much like a traktor I just thought it was normal. Like you say best to get it looked at. Won't cost nowt for someone who knows what they are doing to pop the hood and listen.

yeah cheers mate, ahh i see, the first link doesnt really sound that bad to me :quiet: sounds abit like a remote control lol, but yeah best to get it checked as rather it get sorted now instead of it getting worse and maybe damaging something else which then will lead to more £££ lol,
Thanks Adam

i'm pretty sure I've been spelling tracktor wrong all over the place
Yeah it's a little difficult to pick out but once you know the sound you'll not forget it. Tell you what, why don't you get a mate with a camera phone to record your engine idling and gently rev it back and forth between idle and 2.5krpm. Wang it on youtube and shove the link on here. Get the mic close to the engine bay though. Should be able to tell you whether its the dephaser or not tbh. If not someone else on here will likely be able to give you some views.

Hi, this is what a knackered dephaser would normally sound like:

They normally go from infrequent oil changes from what ive heard from various people, never a good sign really.

Open your bonnet and make sure the engine is warm, it won't do it half as much if its cold. Mine was screwed as you can hear lol, screws up cam timing when it gets that bad, it was a lovely present I got from the previous owner :) Got it all changed when I had my cambelt done, you wanna hope its not that coz its not a cheap job at all, your talking a new cambelt + the dephaser pully + fitting, around £500 from someone who knows what their doing!

ive only had it 3weeks lol  i did phone a company up that deal with renaults i just said how much will it cost for cambelt and dephaser fitted ect, came out at 730 :rasp: there is a place near mine that do deal with renaults got a really good name aswell, but atm aint got time to go to them as there about an hour away, not long but the time i finish work it be closed lol , but yeah il upload a video tomo and see what people think, yeah yours does sound abit knackered  did you still drive it like that ? hope mine dont get that bad

lol thanks for the spelling help I was a way off :slap:.

Yeah yours was proper badgered wasn't it. Mine was a little less clattery but not far off that. Like you say get the car up to operating temp and its much more noticeable.

Anyway Slater get that vid up we'll see what it sounds like but you often find people sell on their clios when they know something expensive is due. Greeny and I being cases in point. When the cars not worth a whole heap over £1500 and a dephaser and belts is 33% of the cars value some folks just sell em on with a ticking time bomb inside. Must be particularly annoying if you get your belts done then the dephaser starts rattling and you've got to shell out again, cant really blame people for flogging their motors on.

yeah i wonder if he knew it was going if it is it :/ mine was only serviced 6k ago well the cambelt was, has had new plugs and that since though :S, i have got a video but i couldnt find my proper camera with video on it (think its at the girlfriends , but i dont know how to upload my video onto the pc lol cant find the stupid lead anywhere to send it from phone to pc , but il try :)
