DCI 1.5 65 or 80 personally buit then again Im bias.
It depends on the milage you do and what you want to do the 1.4 is only slight more than the 1.2 so is a good value but the 1.2 is a popular and cheaper model which will cost less.
A dci will save you in the long run as its more economical but if you only do a few miles then a petrol may be better.
Its more difficult to get such a good deal on a 1.4 16v as the 1.2 16v outsells it by such volumes. Having said that, Ive driven a 1.4 and have the daily use of a 1.2 Dynamique - and theres a bigger difference than youd think.
The 1.2 is reasonable and not particularly slow, but the 1.4 will keep up with most average powered cars. I drove a forum members 1.4 a while ago and burned off a Jag X-type diesel in it! Ok, so thats not a massive feat, but theres no way that would happen in the 1.2 I drive!
That said, Im used to driving a beast with over 250bhp and stepping into the 1.2 Clio isnt the downgrade youd think. Lovely engine... torquey at low revs and does 55mpg.
my 1.2 8v can do 400miles on a £30 tank of petrol. Motorway driving. Normally get about 300-350.
Although its great on fuel, its not terribly fun to drive, as it takes AAAAGES to get going. I have driven a 1.2 16v Clio as a courtesy, and that beat the nuts off a mates 1.4 12v bravo.
Personally, id go with a 1.4 or a 1.6 if i could have the choice, but for a small engine i would definately reccomend the 1.2 16v

a 1.2 16V is only 75BHP and about 85lb/ft
The standard 80 has stonking midrange

1.2 16V - 15 secs+
dCi 80 - 9 secs
2.0 16V 182 - 8 secs!
try before you buy
Get a dCi, at least the 80 but the 100 if you find a deal on one (unlikely). Ive driven a dCi for 500 miles on holiday last year and loved it. It converted me to Clios and if I couldnt have afforded the 172 Id probably have a dCi. My old mans just buying a dCi 80 to use as a driving school car: better MPG and performance than the 65 and only £400 extra hes paying.
That makes sense, there are some dirt cheap 172s about at the moment. (Including mine, which is yours for £10k.. ahem)
At a guess though, I think insurance might be the issue as opposed to the cost of the vehicle. If that is the case, then you wont go far wrong with any of the 1.5 DCis. The new 100 is pretty swift apparently (Ive only driven the 80, but thats nippy enough) and returns excellent consumption. They are probably only insurance group 5 too..
Have a cheak how much etxra a 172 is I think if I did less miles that I could have bougha 172 when I was younger and OK insurance would have killed me but the car would have depreciated less so the cost would be about the same ie
My car has lost ~£5k in 2yrs and cost almost £1k insurance
A 172 would have lost ~£3k but insurance would have been ~£3.5k

A 1.4 16v is every bit as fast as a VTR also

hmmmm dont agree adamf i used to own a vtr and my 182 is in reg vardy at the mo and i have a meganne 1.4 dynamiqe 16v its very slow wouldnt touch a vtr cant wait to get me 182 back
