Whistling exhaust/CAT solution...

  330ci sport
During the last 6 months I’ve had an ever increasing problem with my standard 182 exhaust. To cut a long story short it appears that over time, as the exhaust has sagged in failing hangers, a lot of pressure has built up on the top of the join between CAT and centre section.
I was first aware of the problem when I was getting a whistling sound from the exhaust at high revs. Over time this whistling got louder across more of the rev range and turned out to be a hairline crack on the CAT flange.

I initially used sealant as a quick fix, and later had the crack welded. Unfortunately this only acted as a temporary fix as the top half the flange eventually broke away completely.

Fed up of the ongoing problem I gave Ryan at NW Performance a shout to see what he could recommend. Instead of fixing up the seemingly weak flange again we agreed to go for something more substantial. The guys at NW performance cut the existing broken flange away from the CAT and centre pipe. They then welded in a new short section of pipe and a Flange connection similar to the manifold end of the CAT, or that of the 172’s.

I basically wanted something that was going to be cheaper than spending out on a new CAT/exhaust and would give the existing system at least few months of life, so far it is certainly doing the job!!

Lol,

Not the best pic, to be fair the rest of the 'saust has gone the same very quickly! Hate to think what the amount of salt thrown around over the last month has done to the underneath of a lot of cars!!!
