Why can't I find a decent 182 for around 2300.

Ok, so i'll go against the grain completely here.

Personally, i wouldnt spend all your money on a 'mint' one, in fact, i never do.

I'd buy a cheap one, but factor in the price getting the work done yourself, either via a specialist on here, or via your own hardwork, prior to buying. Then you know its been done properly.

People want something for nothing. If you want a good example that has always been looked after and had money spent on it then pay good money for one.

When I bought mine I was looking for a Monaco blue ph2 172 and lucky enough one came up for £2k in great condition !!!

Best thing to do is watch the classifieds here for decent examples and also you can search the owners posts for trouble or work they have done ;)

That's what I normally do buy in forums or eBay if it is a bargain and not mind doing the work if needed

It is worth noting that you can get a well looked after but still high mileage 182 for a lot less than you'd think.

Mine is well looked after, has had belts done and oil change every 5k. But i'm not looking to get much about £2500 for it because its got 100k miles.

There was that other one for sale on here with 104k for £1850 solely because of mileage!

Which i think is madness tbh why people have a stigma about 100k + cars

Buy on condition, history and recent work carried out !!

And also you get a feel from the owner when viewing on how they look after the car too ;)

Got my 172 53 plate and it had 36k on the clock, full service and belts done for 2400. This was absolutely mint bar a scuff on the ps arch. To be honest I'm probably going to get the belts done anyway because I'll be keeping it for quite a while and I want to make sure they don't let me down. It will only be another year until the aux belt needs doing again anyway!

For the sake of a different exhaust there really isn't any point in getting a 182.

People on here always seem to forget/ignore the north/south divide (it DOES make a significant difference) and private/independant sale when quoting how much they paid.

OP is in London, which is hardly going to be the cheapest part of the UK...

It really isn't uncommon for good 182s at an independant to be advertised at £4500 "down souf." Minus 1k for a private sale. Fortunately if you're patient there are enough 1*2s to be pick out a good one.

As you're clearly on a budget and out of your depth from the off, go drive a Ph1 and a Ph2 and see which you like more.

The front end of the Ph1 is much meaner looking, and IMO looks so much like the angry-hot-hatch of the Clio family than the Ph2 does. I've owned both and driven countless RS's and the Ph1 wins for me every single time.

Mental to spend an extra thousand pounds so you don't have to look at the headlights you can't even see when you're driving it :rasp:

As already stated, condition > milage. I'd rather a 100k car that's been looked after properly than a 10k car which has never been over 2500RPM or more than 4 miles at a time in its life !

Grabbed mine a week ago for £2800, 55 plate, 74k, FSH and service just done (all but two from renault), all belts & water pump done 10k ago, exhaust been done, bodywork is spot on. So you can find them in that region. I had to search quite a bit and travel a couple hundred miles!

Can be done, depends on your requirements though...

My 182 was £1,850 and didn't need the belt changed for 3 years (I go by age as I only do about 3,500 miles a year!) however it was high miles and doesn't have cup packs.

Suits me fine though as I want carbon fibre splitter/coilovers/2118's :clown:

Oh and just to add... years ago I had a 3 year old 182 which cost me £6,000 and my new one is much more mint! Despite being 5 years older and having over double the mileage.
