why does decat sound crap compared to cars without cats in the first place?

Do you mean older car that have large engines?
Cos you mainly hear 1.2s ect running around decatted now, and a 1.2 will always sound s**t.
But thing with larger engines such as TVRs and AMGs sound amazing.
When I decatted mine it sounded crap on full throttle but the only silencer it had from the manifold was the back box plus it was that raspy it caused everything to rattle in my car.

if you look at a pre and post cat model of the same car, you'll often see a silencer on the earlier model, where the cat is on the later model

I decatted my car last weekend (10 quid, god bless Mexico!) and was expecting noise, smells, raspiness and all the stuff everyone talks about here... except it didnt happen. The tiimbre of the exhaust noise changed, its a little bit growlier but that's about it. No emissions light either. And yes, the car pulls better now!
I'm beginning to thinks that a lot of the ppl here doing decats may not be getting a good seal at the flanges (we all know how those sound... kinda like the descriptions IIve read here from people doing decats)... dunno really

Simple newer cars weren't designed to have decats whereas older cars were designed without cats. Hence them sounding better so not really a big mystery.

Does it have a lot to do with most older, non cat cars, are 8 valve and not 16 valve?
mmmmmmmmmmm the plot thickens il have to think a bit about that one.....
it just depends upon the car/engine and the exhaust; raspy non-cat example could be the 1600 CVH in the XR3i - even with the factory exhaust, these would sound raspy
must say that i was surprised at just how noisy a decat was on my RS, but it does depend on the exhaust you've got it hooked into. they're hella noisy without the std airbox as well. think it's just a noisy engine if you run 'open' induction/exhaust

Which exhaust did you run your decat with Henry?
Mine's basically a k-tec supersport but it sounds different to a standard k-tec system for some reason. It's raspy how it is now but with the decat it got that raspy it vibrated everything in my car. (car's rear is stripped)
i've got a (second hand) 2.5" stainless KTEC on mine
it was unbelievably noisy at large throttle openings with a decat on it. funny you should say yours seems to vibrate, as i thought mine did as well, although this may have been to do with how i'd mounted it (didn't check before taking it off shortly afterwards!)

Lol! Just like me then, I had the decat pipe on for about a day, apart from it giving me a headache it was embarrassing to drive with it being so loud. Also drove 190 miles back with it on in that day as well.
On full throttle I couldn't hear anything apart from the exhaust, even with my stereo turned up as loud as it could it go would get drowned out by it.
