Wierd Humming/Whirring Noise...

its been doing this for the past few days, but i thought nothing of it.... it was still doing it when i drove home then so i thought i may aswell see if anyone has any ideas...

speeding up the whirring/humming increases, and it decreases when slowing down.... originally i thought it was something rubbing... but ive had the wheels off and checked, everything seems fine.

...i then thought it was something to do with the gearbox, but it still does it with the clutch down and the same with it out of gear...

i cant seem to pinpoint where its coming from, kind of hard when driving. ive seen posts on here about the rear wheel bearings... could it be these? although there is no vibration, just the noise that increases / decreases with different speeds...

cheers if anyone has any ideas :approve:

When going round corners if it gets quieter on one side, thats the side to look at.

The bearings for the rear cost me £45, but my dad replaced it for me so I dunno how much by yourself.

it dosent seem to get louder or quieter going round corners at all, its not really that loud at its loudest but its just about noticable....

...like ive been hammering it into roundabouts to see and it just stays the same pitch and loudness.... :S

edit: im not 'lol'ing jay!! - what a bi**h you edited your post  lol

jack up each wheel, spin the wheel, the one that moves most freely is the one that needs replacing. it is most likely to be one of the rears.

Wheel bearings are easy to do, just get a hammer to press the bearing back in.

It would happen to the one with the most "play" when there is no weight on the wheel, only you twisting it slightly. Spin the wheel and you may even hear it.

its never been the max :p i wouldnt be going lower if it was.... il spin the wheels in a sec

just been out for a drive to drop some things off... and noticed this 'noise' only happens in 4th and 5th gear, when speeding up and slowing down... although if i put the clutch down the noise goes... so im guessing its gearbox related :( ??

ive spun all the wheels with it jacked up and it dosent make any wierd noise and none are easier to turn than the others... plus the noise dissapears with the clutch down :S

cars still under warranty though thank f**k.

Don't wheel bearings come under wear and tear though ?

If it dissapears with clutch down, doesn't that mean a clutch release or thrust bearings gone :dapprove:

P.s Hope you get it fixed good luck ;)

What did this end up being then foxy and how much was it to get sorted as mines started to make a whirring noise?

Cheers

its getting done tommorow, its 40 quid for the bearing iirc then u gotta get it pressed into the hub by a garage....no idea on labour costs tbh

F0xy get it jacked up, get the wheel off and take the drum and bearing to a local garage.

Any decent place would press the bearing out the drum and press the new one in for a tenner cash in hand.
