Will 215/40R16 fit a MK1 172

As above... obviously on a 7 x 16" rim. I know the tyre will fit the wheel and the rolling radius is the best match but will it fit ok under the arch?

I would think so yes, the rolling diameter is slightly less and there is 5mm extra width either side but considiering people put 17s+ on them they should be fine.

Is it not 10mm either side? 195s to 215s
