Wishbones

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
My 182 cup 54 plate has the lower castor wishbones but Dan did say it looks like they could have been replaced at some point.

On a 54 cup there is certainly no reason to think it would have had those from the factory, so probably been replaced with the lower spec ones.

My Oct 2003 172 has normal wishbones. I've had the car for 6 years and there is no paperwork to say that they might have been changed before my ownership.

Thanks for the feedback mate. I assume by "normal" you mean the lower spec non extra caster ones, as opposed to normal for a cup?

Deffo looking like 03 is the changeover year so far.

So, 172 cup, 182 cup/trophy and 182 cup packed all have the increased castor wishbones. Everything else has normal?

No, thats not the case it would appear.

Everything upto 2002 has lower caster ones.
Everything 2004 onwards has high caster ones.

And for 2003, cups have the extra and its a matter of luck for the non cups it would appear!

So random. Least you've managed to pretty much clear it up though. I did always wonder myself.

But that does mean a pre 2002 cup would have the lower castor ones then? Which is surprising!

What year did cup come out? 52 plate is earliest one I ever recall seeing.

My 52 plate (October 02) cup has increased caster ones.

I think they (172 cups) came out October 2002.

I think when I said 2003 on, I probably should have said "Late 2002 on", but date of manufacture and date of registration can be different anyway so even that wont be a totally accurate rule.

Basically, early cars are less, late cars are more, middle cars are a lottery!

So I can slap some later arms on my phs1 and that will increase the castor? That simple?

What's this about the subframe though, does that mean they will not fit?

Yes its that simple, in fact here is my mrs doing exactly that the weekend before last:

Instant added caster, and no problems at all.

The later subframes are wider spacing where the wishbones attached apparently, thats something else worth cataloging TBH, ph1 definately are all the narrow type.
Later arms fit fine still though the ONLY difference is the holes.

Fitted the later wishbones to my 2002 Ph2. Gained the extra castor and seems to have reduced the r/h driveshaft binding. Need to do some more liner/bracket trimming as it's started to rub again with the wheel further forward in the arch.

Cheers Chip!

Did you ever get a photo of these back to back as I can't tell the difference? I have a spare pair without balljoints in so I'm curious to know which ones they are.

Quick bump.

Has anybody got any pictures of the difference it makes?

I presume its possible to fit the 172 verrsions to a 182 to reduce the caster?

Thanks.

Here is a photo comparison showing the control arms from a 2001 Ph2 (non ESP) and a 2003 Ph2 (ESP), both non cup. I also have another 2001 Ph2 and they were identical to the other 2001 Ph2.

When looking down from top the late Ph2 is pointing more to the front, hence why more caster.

I also transferred the subframe from a 2001 Ph2 to the 2003 Ph2. I also fitted the 2003 (more caster) control arms onto the 2001 subframe without issues.

Here's the 2001 Ph2 subframe with standard 2001 control arms
