Written off 182 cup, advice please

Hi guys been a while since i posted on here.

Im going to visit a 182 cup on Wednesday this week and it is an insurance write off that has been fully repaired.

Its only done 8000 miles and the guy only wants £5.5k for it! The interior is un-marked and there are no scratches.

Its on an 2005 plate, has all orginal documents except VIC check. The guy says hes not sure if its a CAT C or a CAT D.

Id like you guys to give me some advice on buying a written off 182 and the things i shud look for and the questions i should ask.

Here are some of things i will look for:

-suspension damage
-does it drive straight?
-paint over spray
-sub-frame damage Ie: twisted or warped
-innner wing damage
-air bags deloyed?

I will also hpi check it etc but is there anything else i shud check for and is it a good idea buying a written off car? :-s

I saw it on ebay, its not the one with cup alloys is the one that has normal alloys and the guy is based in nottinghmshire

Agreed, wasn't this the one that was sold illegitimately to a member on here as the seller didn't declare it as CAT C/D? He lost about £4k on it?

No one knows, but it does seem odd, say it was written of after being 1 year old, since then it's had 3 owners all deciding to sell within 4 months, seems fishy to me.

Agreed...if you like a car, you keep it...unless all of the other owners have bought the car thinking that they can make a profit out of a CAT C or D car (some people have been trying on 172s, 182s and even V6s!) :quiet:

There's got to be a reason for it changing hands so regularly...and I wouldn't be certain you won't be getting your fingers burnt!

I would go for it but offer a much reduced price.

This way if it does proove to have some major problems you can either sell it or break it.

thing is though, if you do buy it, think what will happen when you come to sell it - no one will want it, exactly what's happening now with the seller.

Personally, if the seller doesn't even know if it's CAT C or D then I'd be a bit wary. Surely that means he/she doesn't fully know the history therefore neither will you.

Ask him why he's saying he's owned it for 'just over a year' when an HPI report will say the date of last keeper change was 20/12/2006.

I'd steer clear of it, probably the same thing the last 4 owners wished they had done.

Pay someone like Edde a couple of hundred quid to come down with you.

Even if you bought it and kept it for a year then went to sell it it would go up in value as people would forget.

Tbh the people that have sold it don't seem all that genuine. WHy would they not just hide the fact is was written off? There must be something quite obvious when you go to see it, e.g. and arch has been remoulded in the wrong shape or something.

Get an AA/ RAC mechanical check done, about £150. But, there has to be a reason why it's changed hands so often.

Like everyone says, it's changed hands with worrying frequency and tbh you shouldn't have to ask why you shouldn't touch it, given that! I wouldn't even waste the time/money on getting somebody to give it an "expert" look over, I'd just walk away...
