Picked up a set of ST170 wheels a couple of weeks ago for very little money, having sold and regretted selling my TD 1.2s I decided to do a quick refurb on the ST170 wheels and plumped for Federal RSRs this time instead.

Painted them black purely for the low maintenance of them, very quick and low quality paint job but as they're track wheels I didn't see the point in spending too much time with them.

These Federal RSRs are night and day better than the NS2Rs I had previously on the TD 1.2s, I've even dropped down a wheel size with the ST170 wheels but the grip is infinitely better, even far better than the PilotSuperSports I use for road tyres on my standard wheels.

Also let my mate have a go of the car one night and took a couple of quick drive by videos of it.

Next trackday I'm booked on for is Cadwell on the 16th July, should prove to be quite an interesting event lol

Looks superb on track mate, really purposeful even as standard.

So the Cadwell Park trackday came along and what an amazing track it is. Will certainly be doing more days there. Car peformed well bar the last session where I lost a fair bit of boost. Turned out the spring inside the actuator had gotten weak due to the heat from the turbo.

Few photos from the day.

The Federal RSRs performed brilliantly too, difference between them and NS2Rs is night and day.

One thing that's always bugged me is the size of the steering wheel, just always felt oversized and cumbersome, so I decided to replace it with an OMP 330mm wheel.

Steering feels heavier and much more precise now.

Also decided to tidy up the front subframe with a big of chassis paint, looked a bit odd with the rear beam being tidy and the front a nice shade of orange lol.

and did the rear crash bar too while I was at it.

I'm at Oulton Park again next week, fingers crossed this weather breaks and we get a decent day.

Interesting you found the federals better than the Nangkangs, I need to get mine properly scrubbed in so I can compare them better! I found the NS2-R's to be better but I think my RS-R's need more miles on them!

Wasn't a small difference either and tbh my RSRs worked instantly, 1st corner I pushed them in to the grip was there. I've always wondered if those NS2Rs i had were a bad batch or something.

Maybe! I don't know, I've not used the RS-R's in months. Only thing I could think is difference in size? My nangkangs are 195 and the federals are 205 - maybe too wide/too squidgy? Who knows!

Nice to see it still going strong though!

Are they the wheels on the silver MX5? Saw them at the weekend when we collected that engine, they did look a bit wide!

Well the 4th August came and went too quickly lol. Trackday at Oulton was awesome though. Car performed very well and was far better than my last outing there back in February.

I said I'd never run bucket seats in a road car again after my FRP powered fiesta ZS but seeing as I'm doing a lot more trackdays lately and the fact the car isn't used daily I've decided to give them ago again.

Standard seat out and dismantled so I could store it in the loft

I've used the Corbeau Clubsports, for the price they're hard to ignore. Quality isn't fantastic but they do the job very well.

No more sliding around in the seat during cornering lol.

Been a bit since I've updated this but I've had a couple of awkward jobs to do on the car lately, all come with in the past week or so too, so because I wasn't sure if I'd make the Donnington day I've had to cancel it. Pretty gutted really.

1st thing to go was the manifold gasket. Blew it apart properly lol

5C6095A0-BA4E-4881-BCC4-6F74404CF267_zpsoudpzs3q.jpg

as you can imagine it was blowing like mad.

Job turned in to a nightmare quite quickly when the allen key snapped inside one of the manifold to turbo bolts
0499F08C-CE73-4E2E-87CD-E57142F1A412_zpsgpja9qdw.jpg

Spent ages trying to fish the piece of allen key out of the head of the bolt to no avail, so I used a bolt extractor which just snapped the entire head off
31A32CB2-B8B9-4553-B5FC-8A779EA9DF15_zps7b8xmxpu.jpg

and even then the piece of allen key still wouldn't come out lol

So with the manifold now off I tried a smaller bolt extractor to take the rest of the bolt out and it snapped again but recessed in to the turbo housing, leaving me no choice to drill it out. Due to the bolts being high tensile it took a long time to drill and several sharpens of the drill bit. Once I'd removed the rest of the bolt I decided to convert to nut and stud instead to save the mither of snapped bolts should the manifold need to come off again.

Few days later I found a large puddle on the drive and an empty coolant header tank and after a bit of investigation I thought it was the water pump.

So off it came so I could take it down to SP water pumps in Warrington (Turned it around in a couple of hours)
91A5F3B3-4273-410D-B3F2-008DF9BF462E_zpsknl1hkpx.jpg

Alarmingly though the water pump housing had corroded inside, leaving it extremely pitted.
EE06B9E7-77A9-4545-9A09-D0410C174A1C_zpsmzixfsjq.jpg

Not realising it was going to be an issue later on I ignored it and refitted my newly refurbed water pump
785DA593-B5F5-4CE8-BC10-C2F968AC3CAB_zpsmhakmbko.jpg

Bolted everything back up and the leak was still apparent, as it turned out, the actual housing had a tiny pin hole in it and was spraying coolant down the back of the housing on the block and down between the air-con pump and oil sump.

Fortunately a new housing was for sale on eBay, very rare to see these for sale and never seen one for sale on eBay anyway. It arrived this afternoon.

and bolted on

After bolting everything else back on and bleeding the system there's no more leaks apparent thankfully. So fingers crossed nothing else breaks before I'm due at Oulton Park again on the 14th November.

Well on Sunday evening I got a message off a mate telling me somebody was after selling their spot for Donington. Really was last minute and by 8pm on the Sunday I was booked on. lol
Was overbooked but the track layout is brilliant, very quick circuit with fast flowing corners.

Last trackday of the year at Oulton the 14th November came along and it was my turn to have car issues this time lol

Just a few photos from the morning as the photographer didn't brave the monsoon weather that we got in the after afternoon.

1st session my manifold to turbo gasket blew again, (serves me right or using a non gen gasket). Being 1st thing in the morning I decided to carry on and I really shouldn't have because the heat from the blow melted my radiator fan and the wiring for the lambda sensor.

Anyway on Sunday morning I started pulling the car apart to suspect the damage, managed to snap my downpipe bracket as well.

Blown manifold gasket

Bought a gen gasket this time and I've decided to use longer studs this so I can nut it from the top and bottom, fingers crossed this stops the studs winding out the turbo flange and allow the gasses to blow the gasket apart.

But while redoing the studs, I made a school boy error and dropped a nut down the hotside of the turbo 😧

So off came the turbo.

Had to flip it upside down and shake it to get the nut out.

here's the little b*****d

while taking the turbo off, my Vband clamp snapped, (can just tell it was one of those jobs eh?).

Anyway got everything back together and my scangauge kept firing error codes and the ECU kept putting the EML light on,
477F72B3-858E-4AEE-A14A-773F68FB339C_zpsrt8la5e3.jpg

I had two codes which translated in to saying both my Lambda sensors were malfunctioning, bit odd really as I could clear the codes and I wouldnt see them again until I turned off the car and restarted it.

As it turned out, when the wires melted the copper insides must have touched each other, shorted out and popped the fuse.
148E9171-C780-40B5-B734-2687D8DD5044_zpsjs51feip.jpg

Replaced the fuse and the I haven't seen the codes or the EML light come on again, so job's a gooden.

Few more jobs completed. Been hard work trying to get stuff done with the really poor weather and short days.

At Oulton last month in the monsoon weather I had to call it a day early due to my filter sucking up water and drenching the MAF sensor, car was suffering from heavy misfires due to it. So to cure the issue I've moved the air filter up in to the engine bay.
A0C1555C-7093-4D8D-B743-C1E703A09F79_zpsqx379igl.jpg

I've had to remove the turbo cooler as the filter was sitting on it and was getting heated up by it, plus it enabled me to get the filter in to a better position. After a tweak of the actuator I got it boosting to the way it was previously and even after a while I had no ill effect like heat soak so I'm probably going to leave the filter there permanently.

Next up, I bought a SPA gauge for reading oil and coolant temps off a mate.
01768867-96B6-4CB3-9A1F-2BA0DE90FA48_zps7ou8rwmy.jpg

Routing the wiring wasn't fun but after several scraped knuckles and swear words I had it in place.
F4D91314-7F2C-469E-8951-A981A3679703_zpsooxcunnf.jpg

I was toying with the idea of tapping in to the ally plate behind the thermostat for the temp sender but opted for an inline adapter in the top radiator hose instead.
B97E24A4-20EA-4E5A-AF98-806709260D17_zpsaio4wyfp.jpg

Obviously I don't really get any accurate readings until the thermostat opens but it works perfectly fine.

I originally had the temp sender for the oil in the sump via a sump plug adapter but I wasn't getting accurate readings, I'm not entirely sure why this was happening, I even swapped the senders round to rule out a faulty sender but according to the gauge the oil never got any hotter than 75degrees lol.
I've since moved it in to the oil filter housing via a sandwich plate with take offs for temp senders.

FBE2EAA2-AB6C-4936-B072-FC5AD33172EB_zpscywedvgr.jpg

I'm now getting far more believable readings now plus the wiring and temp sender are in a far safer place, when it was in the sump it would have been the 1st thing to get hit due to being so low down.

I did another trackday at Snetterton back on the 12th December, it was a complete washout but the car was brilliant, managed to find the optimum wet settings with the dampers and tyre pressures and the car was awesome, I have got a load of photos which I'll upload at a later date cos Photobucket is really slow at the moment.

Had a few days off work over the holidays so I decided to pull the air con out, idea behind it is so I can fit an oil cooler as the air con condenser sits in the way of the position I wanted to fit it. Plus with the air con rad out of the way my coolant rad gets better airflow and I saw a drop in peak temps.
8A38B318-CBAC-42A3-A43E-3C17F98A1485_zpskkcasuoz.jpg

With all the air con removed i could crack on with fitting my oil cooler.

Positioned the CAF 1st as I'd never be able to get it in with the oil cooler rad bolted in place. I've used the ducting from my drivers side CAF headlight as that's become redundant since I moved my air filter up in to the engine bay.

Sandwich plate and oil lines fitted

529635D4-8875-4193-A4FF-2615EBAF51ED_zpsblyf8o43.jpg

because I've used a thermostatic sandwich plate it's made things a little awkward to say the least, I've left the old coolant cooled oil cooler in place to act a spacer and just removed the coolant lines from it.

and the oil cooler bolted in to place with the CAF running to it via the foglight hole in the front bumper

Seen further reductions in peak temps with both the coolant and oil, biggest difference should be seen on track though as the old coolant cooled oil cooler because a problem after a while where the heat of the oil was just heating up the coolant, doing what I've done has removed that issue. Only draw back is my oil temps don't recover very well when stationary due to the cooler needing air flow. Nothing that causes concern though

I wasn't happy with the coolers efficiency with it mounted inside the arch, the peak oil temps were getting too high, considering it's still winter, they'd be considerably higher come summer time. So I've decided to move it round the front on the crash car just infront of the intercooler

Seen a big drop in peak oil temps, 25 degrees less, and as an added bonus my intake temps haven't been effected either.

Had the car dyno'd at EFI again this morning and surprisingly I've gained a nice chunk and power and torque.
310AA5E7-E988-4E3D-A6EB-1E7389B88837_zpssunzikov.jpg

Mixture of things I've done but ultimately I think it's the positioning of the filter that's helped.

Trackday number 12 in the Focus at Oulton Park again Tuesday just gone. Car was awesome all day, nothing broke and my oil and coolant temps were fantastic too, even after 11 hard laps of the smaller Island circuit my oil never went above 110degrees and the coolant above 100degrees. As I'm sure some are aware Oulton Park is under a bit construction around the Island bend area, so we had to run the shorter layout. Not a bad layout but much prefer the full circuit.

Few photos from the day.

Looked a decent day Jon.

You need to get a camera in the car, want to see how quick this is from inside.

I can't be arsed buying and setting one up lol. I'd only end up sitting there watching it over and over obsessing about missed apexes and mistakes anyway lol

2mins 54 I make an appearance in this guys video chasing my mates RS4 lol
You'd put them on and guarantee the problems would start again

Probably yeah haha
