Surely you need to run TDs on track due to weight? I hear light wheels make a massive difference in feel of not a lot on amateur laptimes.

Can't say I've heard that one before? Although the standard wheels are very light anyway. Changing size of the wheel makes a significant difference to feel whether is be positive or negative depends on the size difference and car though. I'm still undecided on what I'm going to do yet tbh.

Decided on NS2Rs 120 compound for my track tyres and had them put on the Pro Race 1.2s.

Glad I decided to use these as my track wheels as it makes the car look a bit st170 IMO.

I've also raised the car up 5mm all round as I was getting a fair bit of arch liner rub, if I leave it the arch liners will be non existent, added a bit more front camber too.

Next up was to spray my exhaust manifold again as the paint had failed, it was making the engine bay look a right state and as the manifold is the 1st thing that hits you when you open the bonnet it really needed attention. Also used a bit of Gold DEI tape to help protect things from the heat omitted by the manifold.

Now this will probably be the most significant change to many on here that have mentioned the wheels and not liking the fact they were black lol. I've decided to go silver with them :O

Got the wheels back from the powdercoaters this morning.

Now I still really liked them black but I fancied a change. When I 1st put them on I did think "OH NO what have I done" but they've started to grow on me.

Really like them in silver! I was going to get mine done in silver but the more i see mine on videos or pics i just couldnt move away from black wheels. Those new discs you have cost a fortune, how do you rate them? I was looking at them too but mine doesnt see a track often enough to justify it i dont think

I was the same, black wheels make the car look aggressive and I do still really like them but the silver makes it look cleaner/fresher IMO. I just took a punt as the powdercoaters only charged me £160 to do them so if I didn't like them it's not too expensive to swap back to black.

The discs, cost me £265 from Reyland as I only had to buy the rotors, I already had the bells as the car was previously on two piece discs. Only reason I changed back to single piece was because the original 2 pieces discs warped on me during the 1st trackday (DS2500 pads were the culprit for that) I'd recommend them Rob as there's a significant difference in braking effort between the single piece and 2 piece discs which surprised me, I just thought the 2 piece discs would just withstand punishment better.

Ah i see, saved you some cash already having the bells! i have ds2500 pads and they have eaten my grooved discs before the pad has even worn out!! Want different pads now as i just dont think they are even that sharp even when up to temp but really dont know what to go for. Will you be going to RS central at santapod this yr?

Yeahhhh DS2500s were fantastic in my Cup and Ph-1 172 but never brilliant in the Focus IMO either, ok for the road but fell short on track and then ultimately ruined my discs still got a good 4/5mm left on them as well. I've jumped up to Pagid RS14s now, much better but my god they're noisy lol, heavy braking from high speed they rumble really loudly and light braking at low speed, it's light listening to someone scrape a fork down a plate lol.

Probably won't be at Central day no, don't often attend shows and such tbh.

Yeh same here in the clio they was spot on! May try me a set of those then, how do you find them with dust or damage to wheel paint? You should go to a few i did RS combe last year it was a real good day, some fantastic cars on show

They're very dusty and it needs removing quite quickly as it'll eat in to the lacquer/paint, the paint job I did on my calipers is ruined from it lol.

Now it looks like a fresh Focus RS!

I agree on the wheel size on track but lightweight wheels I always thought were revered to use on track so you chose the right ones.

You were correct about lighter wheels feeling better to drive on, 1st Id heard of it but apparently it's true. Tbh there's isn't much weight difference between the standard FRS wheels and TD 1.2s, with the NS2Rs on the TD 1.2s they're actually heavier lol.

Decided to give the paintwork some much needed attention as the dreaded swirl marks have started appearing on some of the panels. Really don't like detailing but I like a clean car so what needs must. lol

Washed the car and masked up areas ready to use the DA.

Concentrated on the swirled panels 1st with Autofinesse Restore, then went over the entire car with Autofinesse Tripple.
Picture below was taken after I'd finished and the sun had gone in.

Not a bad finished article considering I'm really not in to detailing lol

Next job, gearbox oil and auxbelt.

551BCCA0-55E2-4A9F-8A16-78108D50DBFB_zps6tt6pwi0.jpg

Nothing in the history of the gearbox oil being changed so I thought it was best to get it changed

And looking at the colour of this it was a good job I did lol

Next up the auxbelt and tensioner, recently been getting a horrible squeak on initial start up and it was coming from the tensioner area so just bought an auxbelt kit and replaced the lot.

B9196F08-6C46-4D2E-A966-521A137574DF_zpsgxn8j0ex.jpg

Look pretty complicated when you look at this photo of the set up but it's pretty simple to do surprisingly.

Engine mount, auxbelt, idler and tensioner all removed

Then new belt, idler and tensioner fitted

Relatively simple job to do and no more annoying squeak for that area.

Looking good.

The aux belt tensioner going squeaky seems to get all of those Ford petrol engines of that era, the cooking models aren't immue either!

Nice work :)

Had it's MOT last week, it passed but had an advisory with low rear braking effort, so I thought I'd best investigate it.

Forgot to take any pictures but after taking the rear calipers apart I found all 4 calipers sliders seized, caliper pistons seized and brake pads very worn and unevenly worn. At 1st I thought it was going to be a caliper replacement but after a few hours of perseverance I managed to unseized eveything and replaced the rear pads with some DS2500s. The difference in the brakes now was unreal, they were really good before but now they're 10times better.

Next up with the battered front splitter, now again I forgot to take pics as I was fighting the weather but it's a front bumper off job but relatively straight forward.

After completing the above jobs I heard an exhaust blowing noise and after chasing it I found it coming from the front. Wasn't sure if the manifold had a crack in it or it was the gasket that sits between the manifold and turbo that had failed.
26741808-78F0-4266-88D6-C91885EC91D2_zpsid199tet.jpg

So the manifold had to come off regardless and what a pig of a job lol. Knew it was going to be fiddly but access to the bolt in the below pictures was near impossible

Not the best pic but you can just see a nut and stud sitting between the PAS bracket and manifold.

After what felt like a lifetime I finally got the manifold off

and as I expected, nice big crack in the manifold

Had it welded up and refitted it, refitting was far easier and I had it on in no time, I then repainted it with some FlameProof VHT paint ready to be cured tomorrow morning.

Well I'd put it off for too long but the rear beam needed rebushing and with the front being poweflexed I decided to do like wise with the rear.

Rear beam dropped,
BBCB76D5-92A1-4629-8040-3877C8766289_zpsm1nbk3ft.jpg

Decided to drop drop the full assembly down and dismantle it on the floor and what a job, never come across so many seized bolts/nuts washers, I had to fight everyone of them and went through 7 angle grinder discs but eventually got the entire thing dismantled.
D438421E-DA4F-47A5-81E3-901236C6B1FB_zpsym94iimd.jpg

This was the condition of the majority of the parts that came off the beam, can't expect much else from a Ford tbh lol

Cleaned everything up and just decided to paint everything with chassis paint, finish isn't as good as powdercoat but due to not having any powdercoaters locally I opted for the painting method instead.

I forgot to take any photos of the powerflex bushes pressed in to the arms etc but I did get a couple of the Hardrace trailing arm bushes during the process

Bare rear beam mounted back on to the car

I've replaced the rear calipers for new as I was having issues with the old ones sticking again, pistons weren't winding back in to the calipers again, I also bought a couple of new brake disc guards as the olds were rotten.

Rear beam rebuilt

All in all it was a hateful job lol. Car feels better for it though, even with the alignment miles out the car feels much tighter, significantly stiffer with the uprated powerflex and Hardrace bushes though.

Had another crack at Anglesey on the 4th June, was a last minute thing.
