Old Games Collections.

Oh god, this is sad. Really, really sad. I've basically found myself collecting old games/consoles from when I was a kid or ones I missed out on. It kinda started when I found my old Dreamcast and N64 in the Garage and used it to plug a gap in my TV set up. I'm now at the point where I've sort of run out of room...

I guess I started this thread to ask "Am I the only sad t**t?" Often keeping an eye on ebay for some deals or whatever. I know there are some guys out there on Youtube etc who have some insane collections! They must spend every weekend going to car boots/ garage sales etc.

Indeed, it makes eBay a bit of a minefield with prices tbh. The MegaDrive I got pretty cheap with original box, the SNES I got this week with a lot of stuff cheap. I'm guessing you were tagged because you're in the same sad-act boat as me? I'm lucky to have an understanding Mrs lol.

Nothing too special no! I tend to just buy stuff I've ever had and its been sold over time, or stuff I want to play or interests me. The Saturn is a console I've never owned for example and its always interested me as a bit of an oddity.

I guess the japanese stuff is pretty rare over here!

I've got a mint copy of conkers bad fur day on N64, apparently that's worth a few quid now.

Got loads of boxed Snes games inc Zelda (with all maps etc) & steel box street fighter 2

I've got all my PlayStation's (PS1 - PS4) with around 200 games all in. Not really interested in monetary value but I just love holding onto my old consoles. I could never get rid of them, too many memories.

Likewise mate I have no intention of selling. I have always loved games and thankfully still have a fully working collection of games and consoles from the 70's to today. It's getting harder to find 'old' TV's to run them on though! Being a bit of a game nut and former game programmer I just can't help myself anyway 😊

It's good pulling them out now and again but as you say the whole tv thing isn't great. Running even a ps1 on a 47 inch tv doesn't work the best never mind something from the 70s!

Yeah, exactly! None of my light gun games work unless I can play them on a CRT as well. I currently don't have a CRT... arse! At least they are still fairly easy to pick up cheap (although not easy to pick up physically!)

I actually regret getting rid of my CRT. It weighed a tonne but the picture quality was brilliant. Great for gaming really, not ideal for storing though

Probably the most jealous I've been of any thread on this forum.

More frustrating is, me and my brothers had the newest console every time one was released and never ever kept s**t. I remember queuing up to buy certain consoles and games. Dreamcast probably the most memorable.

Did have a C64, Nes, Master System, Dreamcast and PS3 but they disappeared a good while back unfortunately. Last count was around 940 games. The missus is not impressed and gets well pissed if I bring anything back lol

I've had everything since the Atari 2600.

Even some of the more obscure stuff like the Atari jaguar, Atari linx, neo geo pocket, megadrive mega cd 32x etc.

My Mrs was stood freezing her tits off in the Market in Milton Keynes today as I was haggling for that Saturn! They'll probably never understand haha...

I also look back and think "f**k, I remember selling all those at a car boot!" or my Dad, being the way he is, just chucking a load of it! A lot of the stuff I've bought is just replacing games I had going back through the years.

It's pretty amazing how the simple action of popping the lid on a PS1 can take you back haha. That, or blowing a Cartridge until it works (Which, by the way, is still the preferred technique)

You've named every system I've owned in that post, bar my old Spectrum +3! I wish I'd kept mine, I remember selling my Mega Drive with about 40 games for £25 on eBay years ago

Im a hoarder too, have my Snes, Megadrive (1), Dreamcast and my N64 still! Got afew old Nes games too no NES, keep meaning to pick one up but forgetting!! I wish they were my original ones as a kid, I had an awesome collection, sold them all when I was younger however and its a massive regret!

Don't think ive got any rare games really, a full collection of final fantasy games inc 2 or 3 japanese carts, I have the snes adaptor too which lets you play japanese carts. Some fully boxed games like Doom and Mortal Kombat.

I'm in a similar way - but I've got a soft spot for the old PC stuff. When games came in sleeved boxes that had manuals, maps, keyboard overlays, even miniatures.

These were times when effort put into the overall package was just as important as the game itself. Absolutely nothing like the Steam and online console stores of today.

I too agree. Even the ps2 games I looked out the other day had so many manuals/maps etc that the box was almost bulging. Now all you get is a wee advert flyer if you're lucky

So My current setup:

Nintendo: SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii
Sega: MegaDrive(1), Saturn, Dreamcast
Sony: PS1(UK), PS1 (Japan), PS3, PS4
Xbox: Xbox 360, Xbox One
Handheld: GameBoy Colour, Gamboy Advance SP, Nintendo DS, Sony PSP

Stuff I've sold over the years or lost, still need to replace:

Original Xbox with about 50 games
PS2 with about 90% of my Game collection for it

Obviously due to being 24 the games I played the most are of a later generation to a few of you guys I'm sure! I think the largest selection of surviving games I have is either PS1 or Xbox 360!

We had a bunch of consoles as kids too; Sega MD, N64, PS1-PS3, Xbox 360, Xbox One, GameBoy, GameBoy Advance, GameBoy SP, Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii, PSP, GameCube.. probably missed a number of them.
They're still kicking about some where, I recently gave the N64 to my sister for her kids to play. I have the memories, don't have the space or the want to keep it all.

Used to have a hell of a retro-computer collection, not consoles so much but had a ton of 8-bit stuff, all the platforms. Got rid of it all when I realised I never actually used it, these days I use emulators for my occasional retro kick but I can't deny there is nothing quite like having the original hardware.

Fair play to you though, that's a nice collection, hope it gives you a lot of fun

Sometimes I would just buy the game and keep it sealed as even back in 2003 there was a collecting scene and sealed games from SNES era were going for silly money. It was all about Nintendo though - Sega, microsoft and playstation never really fetched much money even when sealed.
Generally bought doubles of mario and zelda games.

Talking of magazines (although not really retro as such) I do have every single copy of Edge magazine since it was launched in the early-mid 1990's. Each month the postie still delivers my printed copy The weight of 23 years worth of Edge magazines is quite scary.

That makes sense! I've made money on 1 console in my life, and that was selling a Wii a year after getting it. I sold it for £100 more than I bought it for, as the Christmas after it was launched there was a big stock shortage. The year before people didn't quite "Get" it I think so preordering wasn't too hard.

HAHA! Where on earth do you keep them all? Surely the loft has a weight limit?
