Gearbox for 172 Ph1

  Clio spor 172 Ph1
Hello everyone, will you help me get a good configuration for my gearbox, since I feel the fourth speed is very long, yesterday testing the car gets very slow in 4th to 6000 rpm goes to 135mph and is moving very slow, which Would you recommend changing, the final drive, or the gearbox? my car is a clio sport 172 ph1 year 2000

Somethings not right with your gearbox then, a PH1 in 4th at 6000 rpm is just shy of 100 mph

What speed are you doing at the limit of the other gears ? from memory it should be along the lines of:
1: 40 mph
2: 65 mph
3: 95 mph
4: 110 mph
5: ~150 mph

I had the ratios and FD somewhere for a standard JC5

You'll hit around 110 mph in 4th gear and leading into 5th you'll be doing around 125mph at 5500RPM.

If you want to increase overall acceleration, you can get a diff and change the FD, or you can throw in the 5th gear set (Which I believe is very easy to fit as the gearbox can stay on) and this will keep you up the rev range after moving from 4th to 5th.

later I'll try to make a video and I'll pass them so they can see the development of the speed

the video car is yours, does it have the original gearbox?

It’s not mine no, but that’s typical of the 172, I’ve had 5 172’s over the years which have been pretty similar.
I’d recommend checking in the bay and seeing what series of JC gearbox you have fitted. It sounds like it may have been changed in the past for an incorrect box with extremely long ratios.

Yeah good chance with the tall ratios, wonder if it’s been turbo’d at some point as they are meant to be awful to drive without a load of power.

  dan's cast offs.
i'd pretty much guarantee it's a dci box from the speed in 4th alone. similar to my lads twingo, that does about 140mph in 4th on a megane dci 5 speed box.

Any of them come with speedo drive ? Never kept up with the DCI boxes, the speedo seems to work though !

running the jr5, totally different box to the jc5 but am sure the dci jc5 boxes all run speedo drive? got info on them, will try and remember to check it out for you later.

@blito2790 I’d say with almost certainty the cars got the wrong gearbox fitted currently. The 172 PH1 originally came with a JC5-089 - I’d say from the ratios you’ve currently got a JC5-126 from a kangoo fitted (something with long ratios but speedo drive fitted as the PH1 obtains it’s speedo readout from the gearbox, the ph2 does not have speedo drive and obtains it from the ABS rings)

You can of course verify this, slide under the car and remove the plastic undertray (if fitted) The gearbox code is punched into the bottom of the gearbox.

The Ph2 172 Model Year 2002 and 172 Cups had the JC5-129 with a manual speedo drive, as indicated in the right hand column of the table I posted earlier in the thread.
Model Year 2003 172`s with cruise & ESP, produced from 10/2002 onwards had the JC5-130 with no speedo drive as used in all 182`s.

The 7th column from the left in the above table is the final drive ratio for those that had not worked it out.
089, 129 & 130 have identical gear ratios, but the 089 has a higher final drive, but not high enough to do 135mph @ 6000 rpm in 4th.

hello, talking to the previous owner of the car, tells me that once repaired the gearbox, placing parts of another box that is not the original 172 ph1, because in my country that car was not sold and the original parts do not exist to repair it, possibly my problem is there, today I'll make the video so you can see the relations of the gearbox

which is the best gearbox that I recommend for my clio, I'm not interested in spending more gas, I want the car to be faster and the ratio of speeds is not so long

What did he replace? You should make the video of each gear because it might be that it still has the 089 gear ratios and its just the diff ratio, Im no expert but it would be good try and rule that out

you can't change just final drive ratios.

Only if you change the crownwheel and pinion. Which means a mainshaft strip down as the pinion gear is part of the mainshaft.

Ahh okay. Not sure why the previous owner would go to that trouble nor put all the internals of another box instead of just putting the other box in

The JC5-089 was what originally came with your car, that's what I would try and source - pretty sure there's some for sale on here if you can find somebody willing to ship.

Here is the video you can do, it looks good what I tell you about the gearbox relation and see when you change to 4th as the car dies

  Clio spor 172 Ph1
Jesus that drop off after each change, that must be awful to drive !
You could try and source a jc5 thats got at least a higher final drive than that. Youd lose a bit of first gear but would be heaps better than that

I'm going to see if I can get a change box here that will help me and have a better exchange rate, so I'll buy one in the UK
