The New Phone Thread

It's really nice in the hand just too small for me after years of a big phone. My note 10+ 5G doesn't even feel big! Weird.

It's so so difficult to use a small phone now!

Ah ok. I knew it was a 30 pro, couldn't remember which one.
I'd read about work around and then I'd read that they had been taken out. Sure there will be another way to get around the issues soon enough, or the US will stop the restrictions as part of the trade deal with China.
Just load any apps you want by downloading the .apk of the app from a search engine. I don't think phones having the play store is actually an issue at all is it? Surely the play store is just a place for developers to advertise their apps, like someone would advertise products on eBay? I know obviously stuff on the play store is probably regulated and deemed secure, but aslong as you download APKs from reliable sources then there shouldn't be a problem?

Gents, I can buy a brand new (but technically secondhand) IPhone XR 64gb for £400.

Is that a worthwhile purchase? My 6S is dying within 4 hours now and it’s laggy as f**k.

if you still like your 6S then take it to Apple for a new battery. It was about £50 on my 5S and it was like a new phone when I got it back (fixed the lag andwent back to lasting all day)

Which launcher do you use?

Still Nova Launcher prime. I actually think I could get one ui looking good but Nova is always set up. Had it on last 3 notes.

Gives so much control over gestures and looks etc.

I said it ages ago, they better hope the pixel 5 is good because that's an underwhelming phone for a none pixel user.

90hz screen. Amazing primary camera.

What else is that XL offering?

Honestly if Samsung or Apple had released that phone they would be slated for a year until the next model.

As a note 10+ owner even I like the new iPhone. Not the lockdown software but what it offers is good. That Pixel is miles away from what people want!

I can't think of one thing where the pixel will defeat the completion apart from maybe the camera and even then we will be pixel peeping.

No one gets to say stock android anymore either. No one makes bad software and I can get to Pixel Ui after 3 minutes on most Android devices anyway.

No wide angle... I just cannot understand the decision making process for that. I've used it more than any other since I've got my phone. I'm taking more pictures because of it. Great addition to any flagship phone and a must.

You're not the typical buyer tbh. I'd certainly consider one, and I wouldn't go for a Samsung.

First time I'm not considering a Pixel. I was tempted to ore order but I just don't need to at the moment. My 2XL is still going strong, I'll be sticking with this for a bit longer.

I'm not fussed on the looks, that's never been an issue to me and certainly not something I'd base buying a phone on.
The camera will be miles ahead still of the other phones. Not sure why they dropped the wide angle, I've not used a phone with it though so not sure how good it actually is.

I wouldn't go back to Samsung unless there was a very, very good reason to. Even with Nova launcher, my Note 8 was still Samsung. It lasted less than a fortnight.

I'm exactly the same.

Was considering the 4XL but going to stick with my 2XL for now. I see no reason or benefit to part with almost £1k simply because newer.

How does s**t like this get through QC? Same as the fold basically failing with minimal use, or exploding phones? Do they just not check?

Whats peoples thought on the OnePlus 7T, non pro?

I'm wanting to replace my Note 8, it's coming up to 2 years old now, and the battery isn't as solid as it was, plus the Camera seems to be getting worse. The camera being the reason i bought it to replace my old OnePlus 3 at the time. Annoying it seems to be a common thing, that the camera quality has deteriorated over time with Samsung phones, not sure if it's a ploy by Samsung to push people into upgrading phones??. My wifes previous two S models have gotten worse and worse to the point she'd be deleting more pictures than she's keeping. We replaced her S7 with a P30 a few months ago, and so far it seems great. I'm just a bit wary of buying another Huawei phone, with the google issues. I know the P30 shouldn't be affected.

I'd be buying outright through work, as the phone is for work purposes as well as personal.

The lack of a fingerprint scanner on the Pixel 4 is disappointing, not that i'm getting one anyway as my Pixel 3 isn't that old.

I've got the 7, perfectly happy with it. Standard camera software isn't great, but the Google cam mod improves things a lot.

Already running Android 10, seems well built.

So my new case/cover arrived today. It's as close as you can get tons skin in a case form. Went for the MNML case. This one:

mnmlcase.com

I had a Spigen Air Skin on my iPhone X and found it the best case for the "as close to design feel" of the phone. They don't do one for the Note 10 so had to look elsewhere. I tried 2 Spigen cases on the Note (Liquid Air and Thin Fit) but both had a raised edge that made swipe up from bottom gestures difficult.

There is no doubt the MNML case will protect the phone in a drop but everything else should do the trick. The phone feels so good in the "nearly naked" look.

I'm not sure you can blame Samsung for some dumb ass buying a cheap and shitty ebay screen protector tbh.

I think you absolutely can blame Samsung.

How is your average phone user supposed to know that certain screen protectors might render the security pointless, unless you tell them?

I don't, do you think Samsung should purchase every screen protector out there and check them all? It's a third party cheap thing. If you're at all bothered about your security then the onus is on you to check it!
They should've set the prints up prior to putting the protector on and it took me about a minute of looking for one for mine to notice that a lot of them have a cutout where the sensor is.

Really? The fingerprint scanner which is the gateway into the phone (banking apps etc) being fooled by a piece of plastic over the top is something they can't be blamed for?

Ditto Google allowing face unlock with closed eyes. Given how much they expect users to commit to on these devices (email, banking ) I'd say security that a child could bypass isn't acceptable.

Surely trolling. Putting a piece of plastic over the sensor shouldn't be enough to bypass the security FFS. It's effectively a free pass into the phone? Forgetting that they discovered it at home, it means someone could pinch your phone, stick a piece of plastic on top and unlock it.

In fairness, that's not the problem.

I think they put the protector on first and set up the fingerprint. However due to the plastic it essentially recorded a blank fingerprint identical to anyone. If they'd set up the fingerprint before adding the protector, it wouldn't have worked.

Either way, Samsung sell 10s of millions of phones. I can't imagine this problem only shows up with one obscure brand of protector so yes, they should have tested it.

I have no fingerprints & this has always been an interesting subject for me.

Until recently a phone could never pick up my biometric data, however with a screen protector on my op6t, it did & o could unlock.it some days after.
Once I changed screen protector it stopped working which presents a similarity, the difference being someone else wasn't able to unlock my phone.

No.

The problem is anyone who sets their security up after fitting a cheap screen protector may have no security on their phone at all! You don't see that as a problem? Jesus...
It's seems as though common sense isn't so common anymore. You've gotta be a right penis to think that applying a layer of silicon on before registering your prints is gonna result in anything but problems?

Your effectively telling the phone that the texture on the underneath of the protector is your finger. So it's to be expected that anyone that presses this down will unlock the phone?

After having my Note for 9 days the Mrs wanted one to 🤣 Got her's yesterday. Smart switch had a bit of a time transferring her data from iPhone X to the Note (IOS backup was encrypted) but managed to sort it out when we got home to the PC and iTunes.

Also had a good play with both of the new Pixel phones while she was buying her Note. The 90Hz screens were indeed very smart but what surprised me most was the vibrance/punch of the colours on the display.

Strange choices in storage (64Gb or 128Gb) and a face not even a mother could love did ultimately push me away from the Pixel line up.

The storage has never been an issue to me.
Google photos always backs up. Everything else gets streamed.
How many apps do you need?

Not a unique position, but I like to have Peppa Pig, Wooly & Tig, Masha & the Bear and other nursery rhymes videos on hand for the little one.

I'm not one for using "The cloud" all that much other than purely for backup purposes. I like to have family pics/vids on hand and have a tonne of music also. 128Gb is not enough (Just) for me.

You don't get the top quality Google Photo backups with Pixels any more though, a real shame.
Yeah I did notice they had removed that. Everyone is wanting you to pay for storage now. I have just got Google One. £14 per year for 100gb. Not sure if you keep the original quality with that though.
