M135i - Attempt Number 2

It's nice to have the option to be a hooligan, even if 99% of the time you don't.

That 1% greasy, fumbled wet roundabout slide that makes you feel like Walter Rohrl is worth it though. Every time.

Because it’s 90% raining , 6% sunny and 4% snow or ice.

for a “fair weather” car it makes sense. I’m not denying it’s a better choice for a drivers car. But I just don’t feel like you get the benefits on the UK roads in normal use but you have the downsides because of the usual weather conditions

Totally agree

Whether the M135i is front or rear wheel drive doesn't matter. I certainly didn't buy it because its RWD, it just happens to be.

If you can find a FWD equivalent car for the same money/spec/performance then please enlighten me.

I didn't specify FWD.

So:
RS3
S4
Golf R (bit slower but realistically how often are you using the extra 25bhp)
S3 (same as above)
S5
435D X Drive
TTRS
335D X Drive
RS4

All the above are around the same performance level but I'd argue are much more suited to the daily commute. There's no need to be so defensive over your choice of car.

I like them myself but just can't see myself ever owning one.

XDrives are still RWD bias and only throw power to the front when you're losing grip. And well all know that Audi/Golf 4WD system is predominantly FWD too....
Your point being...?

What's going to be better in snow as an example? M135i or ANY of the above?

And those that say M135i with snow tyres if you put snow tyres on the competition is it still better in the snow?

And the question isn't "more fun" it's about practicality. Snow is just an extreme example btw, I know we don't get THAT much here.

You missed the bit where i said the same money. They are all significantly more expensive. I've had more manual FWD hot hatches than most people so i know how good they are. It just so happens that this one is a RWD drive auto.

As an overall package there isn't much that ticks all the boxes (for me) like the M135i, beleive me i spent months researching

Average price of around £15k which is the same money.

I'm not necessarily talking about the newest of each. But then M135i isn't the newest version either.

And as you said FOR YOU. Which is what I said in my original post and you got the pitchforks out.

LOL at the pitchforks.

If i had 15K to spend i would probably have bought something like you listed. But i didn't so i bought this for a lot less.

There is a video on Youtube, an X3 in both guises. The XDrive with summer tyres is hopeless against the RWD (Sdrive) with winters on....

Link to video...

I'd bet 75% of the driving general public don't know which wheel drive their car is.

Is it worth throwing it in there that BMW have given up and made the M135i 4WD? I think that probably says a lot about what the average person wants from their car...

BMW seem to be pushing their X Drive stuff a lot recently. And the new 1 series is FWD, as the 2 Series mini-suv has been for a while.

The masses seem want cars that look like they’re 4WD or are 4WD.

But when has anyone that’s actually interested in driving cared to align themselves with the masses??

People who worry about the 3 days of snow we have in a year. When everything is closed anyway and they can't get to work as it's shut, generally go for xdrive. Or they just want 4wd as they believe it to be safer.

Isn't it more of a platform thing? They've now moved to a new platform which they can share with model models (Countryman iirc) and spread the development costs.

Most people don't care where their drive is coming from, IMO the old M135/140i was compromised to normal folk by the packaging of RWD into the cabin space, rather than the 'limitations' of RWD for the 3 days a year that it snows.

Karen from marketing isn't mourning the loss of fully-lit roundabout exits in her new M135, she just likes having more rear legroom to get smashed by the Sales Manager in. It's us car guys that have to live with the compromise with the new M135.

I did 15k in mine over its first year and I expect there'll be a few k more this year.

Economy wise they're really quite good...far better than my NA Clio 200 ever was! Mine's manual too so a good 2-3 MPG worse than the auto.

MPE sounds awesome and Lumbar/bolsters are magic

I've got a modified BW backbox which will be giong on shortly which sounds very similar to an MPE. Along with a splitter, black grill, AFE filter and a JB+

Last year according to the MOT I did 10.5k
Not to bad then really, probably only cost you £1-1.5k more a year all in. It would have been more like £2.5k more expensive for me. I just figured the cost savings from the 330d over a M135i can all go towards track days in the MR2. I must say though if I ever went back to just one car I'd would 100% be a M135i as they can be a sedate commute car but can really hold there own on track days in standard guise.

The guy who lives opposite to me has the MPE. Cold starts are annoying.
Due to some Planning Permission arguments in my area, my A35 is given the full loud start treatment every morning. My one childish thing!
