Had a little play around this evening. Downloaded MSI Afterburner and MSI Dragon Centre. Whilst I have RDR2 downloading I wanted to whack the fans down a bit as they were a bit loud, so I’ve turned it from extreme performance preset to silent which obviously reduced noise. But I still hear a bit of a whine/buzz noise. The pump was cool but the gpu case was pretty hot, despite only being around 45-50 degrees on idle. Is it common for gpus to make a buzzing noise?

You can get coil whine when a GPU is under load. But it shouldn't be doing it when idle.

GTX 1070 minimum now-a-days tbh. Or the Radeon equivalent.

That's the thing, I rarely play games on the PC, but I'd like to be able to load most? I don't even know what's out there, my monitor can manage 1080p.

Perhaps, I should send the processor back, seems like this could get expensive.

If the new GPU will run on your motherboard then yes you will have a CPU bottleneck but the game will run ok.

Doing a fresh build, the PC is 6 years old and at EOL, hoping for a good deal on a 3600 on Black Friday.

I've had coil whine from running high FPS in games. Happens in menus etc if I unlock the frame rates. Could be the installer for RDR2 was running at a ridiculous frame rate and that's causing it? I've seen like 500-800fps on game menus and my GPU sounds like it's about to either take off or blow up 😂

My Asus Strix 1080Ti (now my son's) is pretty bad for coil whine. Though did only do it when worked hard ie. Overclocked and utilisation over 95%.

Make a custom fan curve, the problem with Ryzen is that it idles around 40 degrees, then when you do something it spikes up for a sec and that ramps the fans. It's hard to get it consistent as i was messing about yesterday and got it close as i can for now. I guess if you just have it set to a certain fan speed all the time regardless of temp that works too.

Thought I'd chuck this in here instead of making a new thread.
Currently using powerline adaptors. My router (sky) in the dining room only has 2 Lan ports. I've got both of those running to two plugs in the lounge. I've got the Sky and PS4 plugged in to those.
I'm getting a PS5 and a new TV and will want these hard wired in. I've seen these splitters but I'm not sure if they are any good? I don't fancy having to shift the router to the lounge as there's not really anywhere for it to go and I'll have to drill through the walls.

This is what I've seen on Amazon.

I've seen boxes too with 4 sockets too but I don't think I need that many.

Any other suggestions?

Cheers lads. That’s the box I was on about. I can run everything off one LAN then and maybe use the other plug to get internet to the summerhouse (if it’ll work)
I’ll probably upgrade the router at some point but I’ve heard nightmares of using sky broadband on a non sky router. Probably fixes for that but I’d probably have to ask my 5 year old to do it instead 😂

Thought I'd chuck this in here instead of making a new thread.
Currently using powerline adaptors. My router (sky) in the dining room only has 2 Lan ports. I've got both of those running to two plugs in the lounge. I've got the Sky and PS4 plugged in to those.

6800 you mean? Canada's biggest seller of electronics didnt get any for launch day (today). Can't see many being available tbh. So much for the shade AMD threw onto Nvidia for not having any stock available at launch.

I imagine it'll be 3-4 months, at best, before a decent supply of any of the new GPUs are readily available.

I think it depends on the model of powerline adapters. I’ve got these TP Link ones: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01BECPIMC/?tag=cliospnet01-21 they’re a fair few years old now so I’m sure there will be a newer version out.

I use a short patch cable out of the powerline receiver in the lounge straight into a Gigabit switch which I split off using 3 more cables to my TV, Xbox, Sky etc. It might be worth checking what model of powerline you’ve got but I think a switch would be worth while.

Not as good as the 3800 at 4K, but mostly better at 1440p so given my monitor is 165Hz@1440p it'd be ideal as an upgrade from my old 1070 Ti, especially if I take the opportunity to upgrade my CPU from a i7-3770K to a shiny new Zen 3 5900X.

Shame none of these are in stock anywhere...

Can't wait to pick up a 5900x and 6800xt in the new year. Benchmarks are showing great performance, also solid Linux kernel driver support.

Do people think there’s a reasonable gap between the 3080 and the 3090, for a 3080ti to be justifiable? (Assuming the rumours are true and a ti version is due out early next year)

I want to upgrade gpu soon, but don’t know whether it’s worth waiting for a possible 3080ti or just buying a 3080 now. I’m not sure I’d get my money’s worth from a 3090 on a 170hz 1440 monitor.

Don't underestimate supply demand, given how long the 30 cards have been out and trouble sourcing one, it's likely to be similar if a Ti came out so you might end up waiting til middle of next year for a 3080ti.

If you're gaming at 1440p, it looks like the 6800XT is actually faster than the 3080 anyway (particularly with a Zen 3 processor) so any 3080Ti is probably only going to end up being around the same performance anyway.

I'd be getting in the queue for a 6800XT now.

For 1440p gaming, 100% unless you really want to use the RTX stuff. Apparently it's less clear cut at 4k.

It's moot point because you can't buy any of them anyway.

For most people, I think so,
Getting 120+fps in 4K with good graphics setting requires some pretty expensive hardware, however you can run 120fps in 1440p with ultra settings for a far more modest budget, and it's a big leap in both resolution and graphics from previous gen consoles.
