Clunkity clunk

Hi all

Car has been faultless for a while so decided to break it in pursuit of a little squeak 😂

When turning the ignition off, the shake from engine shutting down made something squeak. It was coming from exhaust/dogbone area.

After spraying a bit of silicone grease on the mount, it stopped squeaking.

That plus vibration under tension from clutch I decided it was time to change mount. Already had a QH mount so I fitted that.

Was fine initially but over 3/4 days car has developed a clunk/knock in 1st & 2nd at low speeds when coming off the accelerator.

Progressively getting louder tonight compared to this morning.

Sounds like it’s coming from driver’s side. To make things more exciting , now when I shut the engine down, the shake makes a racket from dogbone area.

I'd do both mounts while you're at it, neither are very difficult to replace. That one there and the gearbox side mount.

i don’t think that’s normal, not sure the one under the battery actually does much.when I replaced my top engine mount I bought of a powerflex upper right mount insert(yellow),not sure it does anything.I replaced all the engine mounts and the dog bone all in one go.

Cheers ordering both now, hopefully have enough time to frolic in the sunshine afterwards!

Makes sense doing them all at the same tbh I should have done what you did. Which brand dogbone did you fit? struggling to find one suitable for 182. My old one wasn't too bad anyhow think I will put that back in for now.

I bought the purple powerflex one, there was a bit of vibration but it settled down, then I bought a bespoke one from a guy off here that gave more give that the solid powerflex one.

Evening anyone,

Got round to replacing all 3 mounts, top mount, polybush dogbone + upper gearbox. Went a bit too smooth, even the fiddly falling bolt. Caught both no problem.

Sadly still clunking from the front when coming off accelerator at low speeds in 1st. Much much better overall but not completely how I've known it to be. Have read somewhere that pulling the engine forward could help. Is there any truth to this?

  • if so how, is it done?
  • Does engine need jacking up again from underneath?
  • Base plate on my top mount seems to be as far forward as it'll go (towards bumper) Would pulling engine forward even be possible ? 🫠

Any help would be massively appreciated!

Get someone to stand outside the car and watch the drivers side front wheel as you brake/accelerate, see if the wheel is moving forwards/backwards in the arch. Then open the bonnet and gently do the same while someone watches the engine, see if it moves excessively or if the top mount moves a lot.

Cheers will give this a go. Only put a new top mount in yesterday though . Would that potentially point more towards wheels if not mount?

Just to add, seems to only do it when car has warmed up
