Re: TheSloth - my first self build.

^^you really underestimate me Roy. . . lol i have to connect all the shiz together! i need a map or something tbh.

Re: TheSloth - my first self build.

^^ Nah most of it's plug and play. The trickiest part will be connecting up all the front panel leads.

Re: TheSloth - my first self build.

Just rememeber to install all the drivers for the board etc. Update windows and then perhaps look at updating all drivers from the web. Also try to update the BIOS at some point too.

Re: TheSloth - my first self build.

Might wanna take up the art of wire management. At the moment the inside of my pc is a complete mess with wires everywhere. I wish i had have bought a different case, as there is no where to hide the wires. Not only does it look a bit messy (not really too bothered about that, lol) but the amount of wires is pretty much completely blocking one of the intake fans at the front of my pc :X

An Akasa Eclipse case, some velcro ties and normal cable ties helped enormously with my build. It's tidy as a house owned by an OCD afflicted clean freak.

ive got an antec nine hundred, and theres just nowhere at all to hide the wires, unless you cut holes in the back panel. I'm using cable ties at the moment just to try and neaten it up a little :dapprove:

its not unusual for the HDD light connector to be the wrong way around on motherboards.

This always used to annoy me until I bought a fully sleeved PSU. I will never go back to a regular PSU with a mass of hideous cables spewing out of it. Modular units are also available. When I built TheBeast2 I used those little sticky pads with cable tie eyes in them to route the cables mostly out of site. It helps if you have a huge monolith of a case too. Safe as f**k.

Got a modular PSU, i spose that helps make it lass crammed as no power wires are unused, but the ones that are in there... all over the place :/

Re: TheSloth - my first self build.

been doing some research and it seems best to (obviously) install the PSU first, then add the cpu, heatsink and ram before putting the mobo in as it is a bit difficult to work with once in the pc?

Re: TheSloth - my first self build.

yes indeed. Also, its worth checking the manual to make sure that the jumpers (if any) on the motherboard are set correctly (its much easier to do this out of the case)

Re: TheSloth - my first self build.

are you installing aftermarket heatsinks? if so you should be careful when applying thermal paste, it's a bit scary!

Re: TheSloth - my first self build.

its important not to use too much and obviously too little, I usually put a dab in the centre of the chip and let the heatsink spread it out.

Re: TheSloth - my first self build.

i put a very thin layer across the chip. you could still see the 'AMD' etc through it. Should i put a bit more on the center then?

The thing is, the AMD heatsink came with no paste. Wheras my aftermarket one did. Does it make a massive difference?

Re: TheSloth - my first self build.

i'd put some more on.

paste is paste - all the same basically.

i never got paste when buying a heatsink but only got it when buying a cpu!

Re: TheSloth - my first self build.

yeah i've just goggled it and i reckon some more is needed.

i'll put up some pictures later on today.

once i've added the paste i am going to put the mobo in and then begin plugging it all together, got a lot of wires!!!

the PC is quite good though. comes with two fans, the psu has one, plus the ones on the cpu and grpahics card. seems like a nice shell imo.

Re: TheSloth - my first self build.

go get some from pc world - cheap as chips is thy old thermal paste!

Re: TheSloth - my first self build.

literally - only way to make sure it's ok is boot into bios and check the temperatures....some require a lot more than you think others less.... on my p4 it's was thinish....i know that doesn't help.

Re: TheSloth - my first self build.

i've put on what i think is reasonable tbh re the thermal paste. It does seem like something hard to judge. I'll see what i get with the bios temp stuff later on in my build.

I've jsut screwed in the mob too so just got ot have a good old look at the manulas for all the wires.... :( doh! the bit i am dreading the most!

mcbunny - lol i am a techno leper! give a guy a break! ;)

right, everything is in now. bar the graphics card.

should i put all the cables in beofre the graphics card just for ease? I'm thinking maybe put the grpahics card in now, then work around it for all the power cables etc and wires...

ok, so the HD cable goes into the SATA 2 plug? I have plugs for SATA1,2,3, and 4. Do these just refer to the amount of HD's or something more particular?

Re: TheSloth - my first self build.

lol sorry for no updates!!!

quick summary for you:

the PC worked first time i powered it up.

installed XP - no issues at all.

Due to my version of XP being old it got some sort of virus and i had to do a reformat last night after speaking to Griff at length on the telephone.

I was too knackered to come back on here tbh.

Fuller update tonight!!!!

but so far it has been a success!!! :)

This is a really interesting thread. I like!

Can I be the first to say, "Crackerjacknackooommmbop!" ?

Was the virus when you went online and it shut your machine down after a countdown? I got that once. Actually twice.

I want to build a computer now :(
