Hardwiring Tom Tom Sat Nav?

  V6 230
Hi,

Buying a Tomtom tomorrow to help me get to Brands Hatch on sunday for the BTCC and am going to hardwire it, so to speak, into the 172.

The plan so far is to
  1. Have an inline fuse from battery through bulkhead to interior using the appropriate rated wire and fuse etc.
  2. Run this under the dash to the drivers side near Rh side of the steering wheel.
  3. Then use a secondary cigarette lighter hidden behind the dash somewhere (possibly behind the trim where the door covers up when its closed, below the interior wing mirror trim area)
  4. Then use a spare car charger to run from the cigarette lighter to the window mount, so when not in use can be removed or hidden.
I hope you can roughly understand what i am trying to describe :)

Am after any alternative suggestions or things that people have tried before, which may be more simple.

Thanks :)

ive done it twice now, once in the 172 and again on sunday in the 182.

i even wrote a guide on my website...

Dan,

Wicked guide mate, i used your ph2 rear light fitting guide a few months back and was spot on but couldnt find it again :)

Will definately try your way 1st as should be much neater and as i remember when i routed my amp +ve cable through the bulkhead was a pain as not much space!

Any ideas where to get the extension leads from, preferably not ebay as want it tomorrow?? :)

James

i got mine from a local motorshop... A1 motorstores i think it was called.

everyone's got some sort of small, family run motorshop near them... they're always the cheapest too :)

dont spend a fortune on it, at the end of the day its gonna be chopped up! lol

Cool, will try tomorrow.

Might have to keep your website handy as fancy lowering the 172 in a few months and as far as i know there are no 172 Haynes manuals :dapprove:

Cheers

indeed, no haynes manuals were produced.

My website's due an overhaul shortly, but the guides will be staying :)

Just out of interest has anyone taken the live ignition from the radio then bolted the earth to any metal part of the car?? (looking to install my jammer which includes an in-line fuse etc)

Would this work or should I simply go for the trusted cigar lighter route?
Also is it possible to hardwire more than one device this way (ie tomtom & jammer and radar detector?)

Cheers in advance!

will work but if oyu blow the fuse it means no radio and you have to take it out, easier to change on cig lighter
hardwire as many as you like :)
