PC Help (running slow)

My PC from time to time runs real slow and will freeze while browsing the net. Is this a virus? I have done a few system scans but nothing is coming up. If i click on a link off this forum for example it goes real slow and takes ages to open. What could be wrong. This could be a dumb question but hey this is me were talking about.

Let me guess...you're using Internet Explorer?

Try using Firefox and see if it makes a difference.

Install SpyBot and see what that finds as well.

Cheers guys. I am using IE. I had firefox on and i just removed it just incase it was conflicting with IE.

Its always worth pressing Ctrl Alt Del when running slow and see how many applications are open. You will find that loads of stuff you arent even using sits in your System tray so it can download from tinternet or launch quicker. If there is anything you dont use in your sytem tray close it.

I did the spybot and had 55 entries of rubbish.

anyway, try and install FF it may seem slower on first load but it is generally quicker to use, and nicer to look at also check to see what you have running in the background, try and keep bacground programs to a minimum

Install SpyBot and see what that finds as well.

I have just installed and ran this on the laptop. There was 102 bits of junk. Just installing AVG. I also took 5GB of unused stuff of it and it should be a lot faster.

my monthly scan goes along the lines of crap cleaner>avast ad aware>spybot>defrag

CCleaner

Then a full drive defrag

Then get a life which is what everyone says to me lol !!

also maybe have a look at what processes are running, maybe stop things from booting at start up, thatll speed your pc up no end.

run HijackThis and post up the log file

Disable automatic windows updates. My PC (dual 3.6 ghz) ground to a hault last week due to wuauclt.exe, happened to a couple of pc's at work recently aswell and it was windows updates.
