The guy was prob old skool. Its a know fact that these open IK can let microscopic particles through and over the years do make the engine wear that little bit faster.
Hence why manufacturers use paper(and because its cheaper). It might block that little bit of extra air, but they would rather have that, then engines wearing out slightly faster.

The local garage isn't wrong. But he's overstating the case.
If you lived in an area where there was a lot of blown sand or grit that was picked up and sucked into the engine a sports filter isn't going to do as good a job as a standard filter. A dry foam filter is good enough for a racing engine's short life. An oiled foam one has to cleaned and re-oiled periodically, and very few people do.

i had one on mine for about 2 months, i ended up taking it off because it sounded gey when i was only actualkly doing like 20mph.
