SOME DRIVERS SEEM INSEPARABLE FROM THEIR MOBILES

The IAM has applauded a car insurance company’s decision to penalise drivers who get points on their licence from using a hand-held mobile phone.

It raises some interesting issues, too: do three points on your licence because you committed a hand-held mobile phone offence make you more dangerous than somebody gaining three points for a ‘routine’ speeding offence? According to Allianz, the answer is definitely yes. They describe the hand-held phone offence as a ‘dangerous and needless act’.

So now those who persist with this dangerous hand-held habit will suffer the triple whammy of a fine, points on their licence, and an increase in the insurance premium when they renew.

It is now more than a year since tougher penalties for hand-held mobile phone use were introduced. The Department for Transport has said 185,000 drivers were caught using hand held phones in 2007, yet the offences continue. According to a survey by Allianz, 10 per cent of motorists admitted to using their mobile without a hands-free kit while they were behind the wheel.

Ironically, the fine for being caught is now £60 - ie twice the cost of a readily-available Bluetooth hands-free kit!

My 20yr old son claimed gassing on his phone made little or no difference to his driving, I gave him a challenge....

Timed laps on Gran turismo on the PS2....

3 laps without holding a conversation, then 3 laps answering random questions asked by me.....

He no longer argues that gassing on a phone doesn't affect his concentration....

You should try it....results are eye opening....

So to all those who say holding and talking on a mobile while driving makes no dfifference to your ability to be safe whatsoever and is a pointles/stupid law...

You have a car/van/hgv up your arse, or you have a car/van/hgv up your arse and the driver's on a mobile clearly mid conversation about some tart he banged at the weekend as he's having a right laugh.

The driver on the mobile wouldn't make you more apprehensive/nervous that he's going to plough into you the next time you look at your brakes in that situation? He's as much in control of his car and everything going on around him as the guy that's not on the phone is he?

Every situation is different mark...In the peak flow of traffic then yes...But i can't see that answering a call and putting it on loud speaker in traffic, still 2 hands on the wheel is deemed illegal...Just my opinion...

Not a great habit of mine and eventually i'll get done, but business carries on outside the office and thats life.

What about people who smoke in there car...>Surely thats worse!!!

Same could be said for speeding, drinking, driving whilst tired...All acts of recklessness imo...But we're all guilty.

Paul - put my insurance up 150 when i was 17....

i wasnt driving. THE handbrake was on in grid lock traffic n wasnt in a ''conversation''. Barely had a chance to put it to my ear n they crawled past. So please , save the lectures etc. i know it was stupid and im not moaning bout the points or fine. Please read previous posts and the thread title.

Not specifically directing this post at you btw

Agree with the using a phone in busy traffic or motorways imo are fine (conditions considered).

The asbo thing is a section 59. They impound your car and you have to go get it... It's a royal pain in the arse but the PC's that explained it to me the first time implied that they'd "sieze the car" as in take it and keep it.

Even if you were to compare driving on a real track being timed with and without a conversation, I think the whole "racing" part of the example exagerates things a little.

If you go on track for a few hours, it will really take it out of you. Because you're concentrating 100% and actually using muscle here and there.

Normal driving, I have done 12 hours (with a 1 hour ferry break) before before I started getting seriously fucked up. I couldn't do 12 hours on track without some serious practice and preperation.

Anyway, the point is, whilst it may take some brain power to talk, it's not like you need it ALL for driving in the circumstances that've been mentioned.

the first decent post of the thread.

Mine specifically giving you information on how insurance companies assess and penalise relative to this type of offence was a waste of time for you then?

lol! I gave an monetary example of the implications of getting busted! To a scotsman it's priority! LOL :p

Gotta be careful wi the giro!

I put some effort into post that I'll have you know...I had to trawl back through the IAM archives (don't like spending time in there alone too often) trying to find that article I was sure I'd read before.
