172 Xenon Bulbs



  RB 182
My n/s bulb has gone blue, and if you look closely you can see its flickering.

Does this indicate the bulbs on its way out? Done a search but everyone elses has gone pink/purple!

Im gonna have to replace it, and always thought the 182s xenons were abit more 'blue', do these have the same 'K' rating?

Which does the 172 have std?

They are philips bulbs and same on 172 and 182.

I bought a new pair for 90 quid so not cheap.

You could also have ballist pack issues as well?

It wont be getting replaced until after xmas even if it goes, motorbikes only have one headlight...

Yes they are both the same degrees in Kelvin, if your lamp is flickering replace it before it explodes. if it still is flickering then you have a ballast problem. This means your ballast is not producing a constant current which is needed to create the arc between the metal in the bulb. Try replacing your bulb 1st tho.

Can i go upto the next 'K' tho?

Bulbs gone now, having to drive with chav fogs on because i took my sidelights out and cant get any bulbs til monday at work

You can go to any Kelvin scale you like but as xenons only will ever produce 5200 to 5600 and it will attenuate the amount of light as the bulbs are just painted blue.

Fletcher, approx 2000 hours which is a lot longer then a normal halogen bulb

Painted blue???? Erm, i dont think thats how it works matey, Its to do with the Gas i am sure. I have had 4300K and 6000K bulbs in the accord, both come with clear glass - not painted ;)

Andy, stick to the OEM colour, as it will give better visibility on the road in poor weather. I stuck 6000K in the Type R and went back to 4300K ;)

I have a spare D2R bulb, but i dont think thats what the Clio uses. There is one on ebay just now. See ya at the Meet tomorrow matey.

No hes right the higher k bulbs start to use either tinted glass or the have a bluish layer added to the glass to achieve a higher k. 6000k is borderline what a xeon light will produce which may explain why you didn't notice any blue tints on the glass though at that colour the tint would be very minimal.

R20BC, I am afraid I'm right my friend, a xenon arc lamp will only produce daylight. Now daylight ranges from as low as 4900-6750 depending, direct sunlight is 5600 and cloud cover can be as high as 6200. The bulbs are dipped in a type of paint called Colour Temperature Blue which only allows a certain frequency of light to pass through it hence it attenuates the luminance output. You didn't think they just filled the bulb with more xenon gas to make it bluer did you?

I stand corrected matey.

I find it funny when people go for 12000K etc, as they look 'cool'....... they dont perform very well though. Cheers for the lesson..... it backs my opinion up even more as to why the OEM Kelvin rate is the way to go. Cheers boys.
