High mileage trophy

Afternoon all,

First poster long time lurker :cool:, I have been offered a 55 plate trophy which looks straight and true however as it was a company car it has huge mileage, it has recently just had the front shocks replaced which i've read is a fair chunk of money alone.

my question is.. would you buy an ex company car with 170k on it? (1 owner), it has a full service history, tax till this time next year and mot is due in a week.

As I understand a decent one goes for 7.5-8.5k but would would you guys reckon this would be worth? thats even if it passes the mot!

I will check when the auxilary and cam belts were changed and also the gearbox was replaced tomorrow.

any help would be much appreciated thanks

You could get one on 30K for 7.5K, personally I wouldn't go for a high miler unless it was dirt cheap, but that's my opinion.

i'd buy it for parts mate. Or do an engine transplant. Could be a cheap turbo project.

£1900 for a Trophy? I'd even take a loan out to buy it at that price TBQFH :eek:

Long as it has a good service history then milage should not be a problem. Give it belts and a service for about £450 then should be sweet as a nut. Having 1 owner is also miles better than a car thats exchanged hands 6 to 7 times :approve:

im very tempted guys, i'd prefer to keep it for a while and as you say break it, i'll double check when the belts and box were changed as they will be costly. Not sure if the shocks were replaced or refurbed and again i'm not sure if it went to a renault garage or local.

170k? Does that now hold the record for the highest mileage 1*2 on here now? lol

I personally wouldn't buy it because that kind of mileage would scare me.

It's a Renault, I'd steer clear at that mileage unless it was dirt cheap...even then someone else has had the best of it. Bit like sloppy seconds...?

170k has to be motorway miles (lets face it that's the only way that kind of mileage can be racked up so quickly) which means mainly smooth roads, no corners and few gear changes vs 50k short journey/mainly a-roads. This is how you often get mega milers in better condition that cars with much less miles. The engine won't necessarilly be any more worn than one with half that mileage on either as it'd be doing long, sustained journies, most/all engine wear that might occur is during the warm-up cycle.

It is very high milage but as long as it's been serviced there's nothing to suggest it wouldn't be ok and at that price it looks good value - usually find the interior and bodywork (front end aside) won't look like it's done 170k either.

Yeah but they don't last in the same way that a Toyota/VW might. I've owned/worked on cars with high mileages. Motorway or not it's a lot for any car. Friends 170k mile G40 still went like stink but it needed some TLC and could have prob. done with an engine rebuild in the near future.

f**k me - buy it sharpish! That's epic car for the money and as long as the car's been looked after there won't be a bean wrong with it! Worst case is a new engine at a few k and still falls cheaper than a 'low mileage' one!

Rubbish! The only bit of a Renault that'll ever last that long is the engine!

Fair enough.

But like i said earlier, mines now on 113k and pulls better than ever, still on the original box, clutch too :)

I can see it getting to 200k easy TBH.

Billy bargain. Motorway mileage doesn't really matter tbh, it'll have been sat in 5th for most of it's life at 70.

I work with a chappy here and his phase 1 was at 202,000 miles and only gave up as the aux belt snaped !!! doh !!!

Would be good for loads more miles if its looked after right...

Buy itttttttttt, if not let me know where it is, i'll buy it.... ;)

quick update lads, just spoke to someone regarding the car and it failed an mot due to the front shocks and the handbrake not engaging the offside rear. The other advisory were the front tyres being near limit. A small spot of rust also .. not sure where they normally occur on a clio? i'm used to vauxhalls and fords being rear arch/filler cap etc.

Digging a little further apparently they are considering replacing the sachs suspension for the cheap option with what i'd imagine to be cup shocks with "adapters"? to save money as they were quoted £1000 a corner to replace the fronts.

in all honesty I was kind of shocked (excuse the pun!) by the thought that they were even considering not putting the original spec shocks back but looks like are considering it as to them it is just a "car" thats costing them more money than its worth to them.

Strange that it's starting to rust, the mk2 172/82's are pretty rust proof.

Can the sachs dampners not be re-built then?

Probably can but just dont realise it. I myself would happily pay £2,000 for that car all day long and use it! Spend about a £1000-£1500 on it for neaten it up and you'll have one sweet car for half the price of a average one! Breaking it for spares would be a waste...

depends what they do to get it through the mot as it is due in a week.

1. stick adapters on it and use standard suspension
2. pay the full amount
3. declare sorn

i've just made an offer on it pending it passing the mot, but I will ask for the original suspension to either be replaced or refurbed.

Even if it has done 170 +, it's a trophy, not a 1.2! If it is only £1800 and you don't buy it, even to do the bits yourself, you are the worlds BIGGEST nob,

And the rust sounds dodgy for the age,

Buy it with worn shocks - fronts can be refurbed for £600 tops, and the handbrake will just be an issue with the caliper - replace both rear calipers at £70 each exchange, get ChipsAway or someone to do the rust patch and you've got a mint Trophy for less than £3k! Couple of tyres but hey ho!

id take it all day chief. ok its 170k, but will still be fine if serviced often.

surprised at the price as its worth more in bits imo.

Certainly does! But if it is legit, why don't you just buy it without an Mot. You know what the main problems are and can get them rectified for cheaper/not bodged, you may be even able to get it cheaper as it saves them paying for all the bits to get sorted!
