Our LY 182 progress thread

Car  LY R27
Given with whats been done, and what will be done to our 182 over the next 2 months I thought I'd put up a progress thread

As some of you may know the cars previous owner was Bubbles, we brought it in October 2007. Bubbles did a great job of looking after it, but me being me needed it better (that means cleaner lol).
Anyway, after a good clean this is what she looked like
182-1.webp

182-3.webp

And one of it next to what was then our brand new R27

After a few months I needed to sort some new pads out so I thought I'd fitted a set of stainless braided lines at the same time.
BrakeLines.webp

Given that I wanted both the Clio's to look a like I thought I'd paint the calipers, so I order some of that caliper paint stuff off the tinternet.

The car started acting up one morning and I tracked it down to a misfire in cylinder number 3. Turns out the lead had broken down and popped the coil pack. So after a new coil pack, new plugs and a set of Magnecore leads the problem was solved. There not too desimilar to these
MagnecorLOW_LRG.webp

Next was a new wheel coz one of them had a bit of a scratch on it, so now I have a spare
New-Wheel.webp

After some stupid bint cracked the passenger wing I had the whole front end resprayed to get rid of the stone chips. I had all the work done by and fantastic bodyshop and they got the match c**k on, came at a price though, just over £1700 lol
PICT1103.webp

Just after it came out the bodyshop I went up to RS tuning for a rolling road day. I was well chuffed with the result to say the least especially for a standard car
182PowerGraph.webp

Things started getting a little more serious then. I wanted to replace the eibach lowering springs with coil overs as I found the ride a little crashy. It did prove a little difficult as the car has the cup suspension and I didn't want to spend £1300 plus. But after some discussions with the lads at work (I'm the engineering manager of a steel pressing company) and some stress analysis on my design software I ordered some Spax RSX and "tweaked" them to fit.

While I was fitting the rears I replaced the handbrake cables and tarted the archs up

Some pics of the car once all done. The coilys are height and damper adjustable and its taken me a little while to get the settings just as I want them but I'm about there now. They have improved the handling and reduced the body roll, the area I've noticed the most difference though is the braking you can brake a lot harder now. They have taken a little getting used to but now I have they are great

Next came another rolling road day, this time at Tour De Four. The result was withing 0.2bhp of RS Tunings result
182PowerGraphTDF07-02-10.webp

One of the things thats never looked right imo was the silver bullets on the car I wanted them in LY and the lettering to match the wheels. I sent them off to NATHJ on CS and this is what he sent back
PICT1356.webp

While I was at it I got the wing mirror caps redone
PICT1354.webp

And this is how they look on the car
Bullets-2.webp

After regretting painting my calipers coz the paint chips easily I've brought another pair of front calipers which I'll smooth off and get powder coated at work Plus it need some new discs so I'm gonna cut a custome groove pattern into them before fitting.
Calipers1.webp

But we've been talking about buying an 225/R26 as we wont more power but love the Clio as its such a riot ro drive. The cars coming upto 5 years old so needs the Cam and Aux belt doing and it seemed a waste not to do sumin bout this at the same time sooooooo

So I'll be taking it to Fred @ BTM in the next few weeks to get all the work done then straight onto TDF for a remap, plus some other bits so stay tuned

happy to have looked after it since you got it, and to have been your technical advisor. ;)

god i've had some cracking times with you n your cars...

(mostly you fixing mine, mostly in fields, or at race track, or pissed, 3 occasions below haha... and no its not always brakes, as the pics seem to show)

lol thanks mate :o

seeing those pics brought back some memories, many of them drunken.
I wanna get the inlet matched, the throttle body enlarged and possibley decatted for the remap. I'm gonna speak to Matt on the decat, I dont want a flat spot

Love it! Same sort of plans I want to do to mine once I have some
money spare..

Can't wait to see the results once cammed n mapped!

PSJ.

Gorgeous Rich :D glad i sold her to someone who would look after her.

I dont like the bullets :( all too yellow IMO, but other than that.. spot on :D

And watch this space ;)

Thanks for the comments peeps :D
I cant wait to get everything done and sorted, just organised the powder coating and will order new OEM blank discs later. I want pooooowwwweerrr. We make shutters for throttle bodies at me work so Im tempted to open the standard one up a little.

And Bubbles she defo gets well looked after, gave her an interim oil change and flush the other week, £65 on super dooper oil lol. And I was thinking bout getting another set of bullets done, but reversing the colours.

Looking good!

I too have a liquid yellow 182 and this thread has
made me want tinted windows lol.

Keep up the good work

^^ ooh i quite like that might have to buy another pair of bullets and get them done :)

thanks for the comments guys, Ive got so much to do to her before le mans and show season starts lol

**UPDATE**

This is the 1st update of several over the next week or so ;)

I've smoothed out the front calipers I brought off ebay, and got them bead blasted
ad2efaa4.webp

cf2de382.webp

Then I got them powder coated in red, and while they where in bits I thought it would be an idea to replace all the seal etc.
PowderCoatedCaliper1.webp

PowderCoatedCaliper2.webp

I got a set of ferrodo pads and Brembo discs, I'm going to groove the discs before fitting them, not decided on a pattern yet.

Then today I fitted my Scorpion decat pipe
IMG_3496.webp

I was expecting it to be a nightmare job given how rusting the bolts looked, but it came off pretty easily the only bit that was hard was getting the Lambda out the cat. A quick phone call to Fred @ BTM, a spanner and some precision swings with a lum hammer soon shifted though. All fitted
IMG_3500.webp

Went out for a blast and omg when your accelerating the noise is amazin, cant wait to get it through a tunnel ;)

I had the belts changed this week by the legend that is Fred, he also fitted my catcams, pics of this to follow shortly :)

Comments welcome

Great looking car. When you said you 'tweeked' the front struts what exactly did you do??

Great looking car. When you said you 'tweeked' the front struts what exactly did you do??

I took the front shocks to work and slotted the holes out, and opened up the gap between the 2 bits of steel. The cup hubs are 0.9mm thicker where they bolt onto the strutt so they wouldn't quite go on.

As I said I ran a stress test on the software I use at work and consulted all the lads I manage (who have about 150 years experience in metalwork between them). So I was and am confident they'll be fine. They've been on for a few months and they're still good :)

**UPDATE**
Got the new discs sorted, genuine Brembo's with and custom groove pattern :)
94281b33.webp

I had it remapped at TDF this weekend, the graphs and comments will be posted later ;)

Car looks lovely.

where did you find the Spax kit, and was it expensive?

I've been trying to find a suspension kit for mine as I also found the eibach springs a little crashy with OE dampers.

Got the Spax kit from a place in Corby, can't remember what it was called now. I got the kit for £500 after a bit of haggling lol.

They wont fit straight on your car if you have the cup pack though ;)

**CATCAM UPDATE**

2 weeks ago I popped over to Birmingham to see Fred at BTM. The car needed a new Cam and Aux belt so this was the perfect time to get the CatCams fitted. Fred was recommended to me by Matt @ TDF (recommendations don't come a lot higher imo) oh and Naith ;)

Me and Naith got there at 10:30, no Fred lol
TDKcoilys214.gif

Now what Fred lacks in time keeping he makes up for with knowledge and ability, the bloke is a legend. I'm anal about making sure my cars are well looked after and I will have no hesitation about sending either of the Clio's to him in the future:hail: Fred you are my new mechanic :)

So the work began
182Cams1.webp

Me crying at seeing her in bits lol
182Cams4.webp

Old Cams out
182Originalcams.webp

mmmmmm engine
182Cams2.webp

Me constantly bugging Fred with lots of "whats that" and "hows that work?"
182Cams3.webp

While Fred was working on the 182 I was fitting these to TDK
TDKcoilys276.gif

And the car going back together
182Cams5.webp

I'd just like to add that when Fred tells anyone that the parts he uses are Renault parts they just dont come in a Reanult box that he's telling you the truth. I make metal & plastis casting tools for a living so I know what I'm looking at. The new tensioners etc where the same as the ones that came off just with "Renault" scratched off.

Anyway, I left BTM and could instantly tell a massive difference, when the car got to 5K it went mental. I got home and the car stayed in the garage until last weekend when I went to TDF so Matt could remap the old girl. And here are the results.

This is a comparison to when I had it rolling roaded in Feb, but not quite the final result
182PowerGraph1TDF17-04-10.webp

This is the final figure. An increase of 10bhp peak power and nearly 20 foot lb of torque :D
182PowerGraph2TDF17-04-10.webp

All I can say is WOW, I am well chuffed with the result. The car was quick before but its feels mental now. There is so much more power between 4.5K and 6K, which is right where you want it :)

Just want to say a massive/enormous thanks to both Matt @ Tour De Force and Fred @ BTM. These blokes really do know what they're talking about and what they're doing, they don't have the reps they have for nothing people, you are both LEGENDS. Thanks :D

Thanks for reading, stay tuned :)

Great progress! I bet it feels completely transformed compared to how it was before the cams, nice anchors too :)

good update and decent power output now!

im sure i saw this car near market harborough at the weekend i was in a RB going the opposite direction on the A6!

i cannot express how well this car goes, seriously.

out on a run at the weekend and it destroyed a meg rs, be it a fullfat but regardless.

it actually sounds like a mini ferrari, pops bangs and is vicious as hell.

work carried out on it is second to none, makes mine look ready for the scrapheap.

By far, one of the best 182s around! Nice work fella!

Thanks mate, I do try hard :)

completely, the power between 4.5k-6K is amazin. Plus with the decat it revs so much more freely, plus it pops ;)

Nice write up :)

which catcams did you fit, out of interest?

Thanks
I went for the 428's after speaking to Matt @ TDF

Yes that was me, just after the map was was "testing" it out ;)

:D yours will never be ready for the scrapheap while me and Fred are trying to keep it running

Oh and can I point out that it was a stage 1 remapped Meg ;)

Great to see your not cutting corners! Even better your doing it to a stunning LY, rather than a silver 172 as it always seems to be!

Any chance you could PM me the final costs of parts + labour if im not to cheeky!

LOVE this car! Hopefully see you at FCS?
