172 Engine rebuild - How much?

  197 FF Glacier White
Rough guess of course!

As a side, I read somewhere, not on here, that the engines can be bought exchange from Renault, is this the case?

Thinking out loud here, I have my eye on a high mileage 172 that is priced accordingly, runs fine etc but with a 100k plus on the clock, it surely cant have that long left, especially as I intend to use it on the track!

Any thoughts welcome.

Russ tracks his ITB Clio with over 20k more than that as its still on the original box!

The engines are very very strong provided they've been looked after. Theres a Clio trophy on here with 170k on it and its still running perfect.

I wouldnt worry until you have issues tbh, your more likely to go through drive shafts and gearboxes than engines! Just make sure the cambelt has been done in the last 5 years :)

Don't get me wrong guys! I'm not worried about the engine as such, just thinking ahead, maybe picking up a cheap engine to have rebuilt or do myself long term. The engine sounds absolutely fine to me, surprisingly so, testiment to the quality of the engine and the way it's been looked after I guess.

I once owned a Safrane 2.0 with 205,000 on it, went fine, no issues engine wise at all, the auto box gave up in the end though!

Individual throttle bodies much like this kit, but better I would imagine.

Gotcha! Something I haven't come across, I usually play with Turbos!

I'm not after big power anyway, just the 172 bhp it's supposed to have will be fine, I'm more interested in being able to get around corners well and stopping! Thats where any money I spend will be going.

The Clio astounded me when I first drove one, the way it handle itself was sensational! I threw one around the isle of man a few times and it's ability always made me smile. So I'm going for a Cup as my track toy, 172 flavoured, as good a start point as any.

As a side, I'm getting on a bit, the last time I played with NA cars, I was using twin Carbs!

100k will be fine , as long as its serviced on time it should be fine , i wouldnt even think about a second engine , my mate has my old clio with about 130k on it , and it gets used on track quite a lot so gets a hell of a thrashing day in day out , still runs like new as well , the engines in 172's are very strong , not like the old renault sh1t they used to built

  53 Clio's & counting
Mines had many miles on the track, plus plenty of fast road miles, and as Greeny has said is now kicking out over 190bhp on itb's, with 135,000 miles on her, tis even the original clutch!
