Where would you're money go????

  Maybe a 172 Cup..
Basically my cambelt went about a week ago. Not had it looked at yet so unsure as to damage, but obviously expecting the worst:dapprove:

So what would you do in my situation? Think I know already myself but just wondering what you lot think.

My favourable option at min, is to sell mine as it is for say £600 to someone who has time and knowledge to either repair it themselves or strip and sell to make some money. Leaving me to say put £1400 to and spend 2k on another phase 1.

Alternative is to spend the money on rebuild and new belts on mine. Not an issue of having money tied up in car, as it's my toy, and only do about 4k a year. But don't think it'll ever feel the same to me. Feel like setting it on fire everytime I look at it at min tbh!

Even considering waiting a little longer, saving a bit, and going for a 172 Cup....
So what would you do..

depending on the damage id be looking for a 172 cup imo.

but depends how bad the damage is really as to what makes more sense

  Ph1 172
2nd hand engine fitted with history of belts being down not an option? out of interested what millage did you car have on it?

Depends on your know how and the condition of the ph1. If its already track prepped and mint id be looking to source a new lump
If its standard and dog i would be looking to strip it or sell it for spares and repairs

Look at the damage first mate if you do a decent rebuild with a few uprated bits along the way surely it will feel better than what it did before? have you got any mates that would be able to swap or rebuild an engine?

Have thought about this, looking at about 1k probs for engine and fitting. Would be wanting belts and waterpump doing for peace of mind tbh, so probs about 1.5k. Car has 117k on, but loads of history, and an 'easy' life if you like as previous owner was in Met. Police, so most of miles are motorway. In good condition, get positive comments about it, when it worked...:dapprove:

Looking at about £1200 for rebuild and new belts Jimbo, at a specialist. No help unfortunately, I know people who do everything except mechanics.....my bad..

If you do a transplant the belts will need changing and as its out i would look to change all the main b*****d bits such as the waterpump and rad

I px'd that one mate, as always wanted an EP3 type-r, and one came up local with someone looking to free some money up.

Then was selling wifes 1.8T golf, and was offered another phase 1 as px, not as much history as mine but still not a dog by any means. It is now dead.........Should have kept my original one and the golf with hindsight, but you live and learn mate eh......:(

Repair it, its not that hard of a job to drop a engine in, could do it in a day tbh, worth it tho as your not loosing much money, but get the belts done before fitting it as it will be much cheaper,

Sorry to hear your belt snapped, I know how much effort you went to find a decent ph1. I would probably go for a 172 cup as they seem to come down alot in price... Although Its a case of the devil you know so you could get a 172 cup engine and slot it into yours, best of both worlds.

Mine has a cup setup now

I opted to repair mine, i'd only had it literally 10mins... so wasn't cost effective not.

So i'm in the 'repair' or '2nd hand engine' camp!
