Why are there so many of these on this forum??

I can think of four now without going deeper into it, but it seems that people spend literally £000's of pounds fitting cages, bodies, buckets, coilovers etc etc etc and then put them up for sale or break them for parts.

Why?!

Just seems a massively daft thing to do.

Follow the crowd. They see someone do it, they want to do the same and have it all done. 'Yeah, I've got a super-dooper mod on my engine, dontchaknow' and then realise that's it's a pain in the arse to insure, to run and having a stripped interior for the commute is annoying.

So they either try and sell it for original price + everything they've spent when they have absolutely zero hope of ever getting it, then the realisation that it's only worth a fraction more than a standard one kicks in and they cry.

The fun is in the project, the saving up for bits, waiting for delivery, fitting it or getting it fitted, then trying it out, after that its just a case of what next. When its done its boring, its just a car that to the owner is finished.

Also agree with revels, seems pointless doing what a lot on here do and never using it (i.e. track) I am still a track day noob and dont go often (3 this year so far) but I still go.

I like tinkering & building cars into something, then i get bored & pull it all apart again.

On the flipside, i dont spend masses of money, so its no real biggy, the people that pour thousands into a french sh1tbox are bonkers. Id rather just buy something else.

People also forget that a clio is actually a great 'track car' out the box, ie they assume all these mods need doing before they go on track. That is where they FAIL imho.

My Trophy will stay fairly standard. I realised that i wanted to modifiy it as i was simply bored, its blooming ace as it is!!

There have been quite a few ITB, supercharger and turbo conversions which have lasted 1- 6 months before being sold on. I think alot boils down to being finished and also the fact that even when modified they are 'quicker' but other cars may offer more pace for less investment.

As everyone knows any modification no matter how great, you will rarely get back what you paid for it in the sale of the car, therefore the only other viable route is to remove and sell on to the private individual.

Is a shame, but i do think some people do certain mods without fully thinking through the implications of their purchase.

Over on Passionford theres loads of people who've had cars years and years and are continually doing stuff to them. The beemer forums seem to be the same. Just CS that seems to churn out the 'Buld and sell' brigade.

yeh feel for him, but it was obvious that fuel would drop off with ITBs, plus he bought them new, so pricey mistake.

It's not limited to CS, plenty of other people seem to do it. I've never seen the point, either a case of money to burn high rollers or trying to look like a high roller pissing money at a project while living with mummy and daddy. Plenty of lads seem to think nothing of dropping 20K + on shiny bits for a car which could have gone on a deposit for a house/flat.

When I find myself an EK if financial situation allows it will be an ongoing project and I fully intend (cash willing) to retire it from daily driver duty and go to town on it and keep it long term as a fun weekend car/something to tinker with.

^^This is also true. I'm a firm believer in once an engine comes apart, it will never go back together properly. You've only got to look in the projects section to see that all the people that have stripped the engine down to nothing but rubble tend to be the people that have more problems than others.

The day my engine has to come apart is the day it gets set on fire! lol.

Everyone (EVERYONE!! lol) mocks me for taking so long doing my mk1 but thats because I'm doing it properly. I don't want to buy cheap parts, realise their s**t then have to buy more expensive ones and sell the cheap ones for half what I paid!

When you tune a car you just pass problem around or just make it worse. Renault spent millions designing and developing clio so I doubt the average chav can actually make it a better car by spending 1k on bits that it doesnt need.

Is alot of it not to do with it being satisfactory ? i mean im very proud and happy that by 19/20 i have without any qualifications or anything, built a car with both a full bodykit + loads of other mods and done a complete engine change, i did all as a hobbie and a learning curve. I put alot of effort into it but am happy with what i got out of it. i know i will never get back what i put into it but bein on here thats what its all about, learning and trying new/different things surely ?

Then again im not selling mine so all ^ is prob irrelevant.

Can I buck the trend? Had mine 3 years now, and it's slowly gotten better over those 3 years. Unless I come into serious money anytime soon, I won't be spending money on the engine. Pissing in the wind comes to mind.

I think people get bored of the standard car and 2 things happen... 1) they modify it in the hope to make it better. 2) they realise soon after modifying, it's still the boring car they've always had.

Personally, I loved the 182 more when it was standard. Much less hassle in every way, reliable and cheaper to run. I'm quite glad it's gone now, as I simple grew out of the car.

In my own experience I put it down to not going to the right people in the first place. Once burnt, people don't really want to go back to the upgrade market anymore. Judging by the above linked thread *someone* is thinking of selling up because their getting crap mpg return. That isn't down to the mods that have been done ...purely. lol..........

Personally, I'd like to pursue mine. It's just not financially viable right now..

For the record I personally don't regret spending money on mine, I still love it to bits. I just think unless you have fairly deep pockets, it's a mugs game.

I think maybe a big part of it on here is that the owners of the project cars use the cars as daily drivers aswell. Its all fun driving about in the car while its still fun because every weekend/evening your still doing it. But once the modifying/building is finished and that parts done with they realise that they are driving 20-30miles+ every day in a car that isn't good on fuel, isn't very comfy, is a bit more hassle getting in and out (cage + buckets + harness = more of a PITA than falling into seat half asleep and clicking seat belt), is loud and rattly etc etc. When this comes to mind its no fun driving about like that every day so they sell up and move on to the next car.

My project car is a project car only, I use my clio for daily use and so I dont see me ever getting bored of it, also its completely worthless to any-one else so I dont think it'll ever be up for sale haha.

I prefered m standard 182 to my stripped out 172 which is why I am considering breaking mine now.....

As said above, you don't know until you try. I'm lucky in the fact that I haven't spent a fortune on mine and am fairly confident I would see all/most my money back.

Had my 172 for 2 years, all i did was unlower it, put a standard air box on, bought a yozzasport exhaust to, sounded epic but i soon got rid.

had my 182 for 2.5 years has a stainless exhaust only cos i "have" to. Tried coilovers for a bit, hated them, went back to standard, tried 15" wheels to, but now back on standard.

I only buy mods i know i can sell for as much as i paid, like i've just bought a decat, will always sell for what i paid for it.

Standard FTW tbh.
