No Brakes

Started the car up and noticed the brake pedal was a little hard. still managed to stop me at a slow speed, but when I came to apply the brakes at the junction, we nearly went straight through it. Applied handbrake and we just stopped in time!

I've checked the fluid and its fine, went for a few runs up and down the lane and applying the brakes and they seemed to get better the more I did it. Still not 100% though.

ABS Light has been on for ages - but its just that the ABS doesn't work, which I don't care about. My old man thinks its the ABS thats at fault here, but I'm not so sure. After pumping the pedal and doing these little brake tests, the responsiveness came back and I was able to screech to a halt - clio cup style.

Master Cylinder on its way? Or just fix the ABS because my old man is right? Car had only been sat for a day and it wasn't a cold night I guess i could bleed them and see whats what?

I think that if it was the master cylinder, the pedal would be really stiff? I had a similar problem with my old saxo, and it turned out some rubber O rings in the break lines were perished :dapprove:

And the car is????? The ABS fault could be linked as it carries out many functions other than ensuring you don't lock up on some models.

Sounds like you've either got a dead master cylinder or brake servo. The fact that you've got some braking says the master cylinder is fine and its servo assist that you've lost but it NEEDS checking out by a competant person rather than trial and error yourself!

A Mk2 172 - with a Ph1 engine - not that it makes much difference.

Just taken it out and the pedal is still a bit hard, but did a few emergency stops (ABS deffo not working) and returned to base to see the discs a little warm.

It would appear that in my haste to dismiss the ABS light, it performs more of a function that just stopping skids. I guess with the light on the dash, something should show up on the diagnostics....

Stop being a pikey and fix the ABS sensor.

this and the valve i have spoke to you about is the likely culprit if its servo asssitance you are losing, easy to tell. Jack drivers side up, pull away arch liner, you should be able to see bottom of servo, pull hose off of bottom of servo, ten pull the valve the pipe was connected to out of the servo. Blow in to the valve from both ends, should be a one way valve so will be free on side, but blocked the other. if air passes through both ends viola theres your prob, vacuum escaping from the servo.

No chance, that will cost money. I hate the fcuking thing anyway, especially in this weather. But I'll do it if everything else fails!

Good call, weekend job this shall be. On the look out for the valve to replace if its broke.

I did read that low temperatures also cause the non-return valves to stick...I guess I'll see at the weekend.
