182 or 197?

  172 Cup VW Golf GT
When I sell my present car the wife has very kindly said I can have a Clio again (I have previously owned a 172 cup). I am thinking I am going to have about £4500 - £5000 to spend.
I am imagining for that money I will be able to get a tidy 182 or a not so tidy 197.
What are peoples thoughts on both cars? What would people recommend? Good and bad points to look our for on both cars?

Any help really appreciated.

Ross.

With that budget, i'd be looking at a Trophy, purely for the good residuals.

the 197 is a better car though imo but it feels slower (its not) but the grip and the brakes arein a different league. That said, i'd still be going for a trophy.

Trophy or a very tidy 182 :)

No point buying a shagged 197 then having to spend another grand on fixing it!!

Very tidy Full Fat 182 all day long... in Racing blue or Liquid yellow. It's a better looking car simple as that! :D

I'd go for the 197, then a trophy, then a standard 182. I've had both a 182 and 197 and the 197 is a better car overall.

Most trophys will have been looked after i would of thought because of their status. A 197 for that kind of money may not be one of the best examples around! As Daniel says, the 197 is a better car, handling and brakes are just amazing. However I would go for a trophy and wait a couple of years then treat yourself to a 197/200. By that time, prices for the 197/200 models will be low with plenty of good ones to choose from.

Would definitely be a Trophy for me.

If you have any money left over you can put some new disks and pads and some brake fluid in.

With that budget, don't buy a 197. A 5k 197 will not be great (unless you are very lucky)

A 5k 197 will be certain to need a cambelt on age, so there's £500 before you start

Another vote for a Trophy. It's what I'd buy if I was shopping for a Clio with that kind of budget.

I've no doubt that the 197 is a better all-round car but the Trophy is a bit more special (IMO) and will probably hold it's value better.

Trophy. For that money, a decent 197 will be hard to find for sure, a good Trophy will hold it's value, they are a little more 'special' and probably in the right hands, quicker.

You need to spend at least 6.5k to get a half decent 197, I've just gone through that palava, a Trophy SHOULD be well looked after, but they aren't immune to being neglected of course.

You could get a very tidy 182 with Recaros for less again, if you don't fancy red, not everyone likes the red.

For that budget is get a trophy, youd need an extra £3k for a decent fully specced 197.

But, drive them for yourself?

Although I've never driven a 1*2 properly (came from a 1.4 ph2) you can Definately feel the extra weight in the 197. It's not off putting though, and once it gets going you forget about it :)

Why not put a £5k deposit on a fully loaded 197 and get the rest on finance?

Massive thanks for the comments so far guys. Whatever car I buy I want to buy it outright - so no loans or finance. After reading your comments the trophy has has a lot of reccomendations so I have been looking at a few of them that are for sale - they look stunning! What major things do I need to look out for when buying one of these? Obviously fsh and belts done. Anything else I should look out for? Is high ish mileage a no no?

Really appreciate everyone's comments so far.

as said, make sure the dampers have been refurbed.

if they havent, get a further £400 off the price (thats the price of refurbs iirc)

but then go to wests renault and buy them new for around £300 iirc :)

FFS Roy, how dare you barge in here with your opinions.

But in all seriousness, buy 5 PH1s. Better than both iirc.

I generally change cars every 3-6 months or so ... but ive owned my Trophy for close to two years. Its brilliant.

The nimbus 197 cup with recaros? 3 weeks before i sold it.

Says a lot i feel.

i personally prefer 197 over the 182, but on that budget, get an awesome trophy, and spend the change on... whatever you want, currently need a budget of at least 6500 to get a good 197

I don't see the huge appeal of the Trophy version personally, having said that I've only seen one and haven't driven one. I just think the suspension sounds a bit fussy and an unnecessary extra to maintain as a cup packed 182 handles superbly anyway... The colour of the Trophy isn't that fantastic either, obviously it's only my opinion but I just don't see them as being that special! Renault could have made it a lot more special in my opinion as I see it as a parts bin car.... a V6 spoiler, different sus(fair enough), wheels off the cup version, cup headlights, and Recaros that aren't very special and not to mention the cheap looking Trophy decal on the skirts... They didn't even fit a tasty sports exhaust or anything over the standard car......:dapprove:
