Clio 172 or 182?

There's not a huge difference between them. Late 172's had cruise, so identical spec wise. 172 exhaust is cheaper to replace when it falls off.

Given the similarity between them I'd go for the best condition available.

I'm selling a 172 soon, I'll pm you once the ad goes up if you're interested.

Depends what you want it for and your budget! Would imagine it would be pretty hard to get a mint 172 with low miles on it that hasn't been ragged. 182 would probably be my choice...bit newer, but still as every bit capable.

Try a search...am sure you will find plenty of information that will answer your question.

They will all of been ragged!

lol...yip, they will. But think I would rather have one that hasn't been ragged for an extra few years longer lol.

Edit - your wee 172 looks great condition though.

PMSL at getting one that's not been ragged.

The worst thing you can try and do, imo. I bought one which had been used for a 2 mile trip to work, and the guy had a TVR, so it never got much stick. As soon as I started pushing it hard, the thing went wrong a million times.

Show me a high miler that's been pushed hard all it's life, please.

to be fair as well these cars are designed and built to be ragged, as long as its been looked after it will be fine. never understand the people on this site that say they never drive there rs clio hard or fast, whats the point in owning it get a luxury salon if you want a cruiser.

Bingo. As long as the history's up and together, I'd happily buy a 100k+ miler. Tracked and all.

Depends what you want it for....

Comfort / daily driver / commuter with the occasional fruity drive = 182 or phase 2 172
Fun car that's a bit more raw = phase 1 172 or 172 cup.

Your choice

fully f**king agreed on that, i got myself a mint sorrento green 205 1.9 gti back in there day, one lady owner 41k, full history, every receipt etc etc, cost me a fortune in repairs, like you say, if they ain't been ragged, they dont like it lol

Both the same on fuel.. Same engine.. 182 with cup packs feels more planted/ solid than a phase 2 172.. And looks better.

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
I dont like the wheelbarrow look of the 182.

I dont think there is a right or wrong answer though, it all depends on what matters to you as they are all a compromise.
Phase 1 172 is hideous interior
Phase 2 172 doesnt have cruise (well most dont)
Only the cup have the better wishbones and suspension
Only the trophy have the sachs dampers
Cups and trophys dont have xenons
182 has better exhaust manifold

We have built what me and my mrs to be the ideal blend of parts now, we started with a 172 with xenons and aircon etc and then have retrofitted cruise control, 182 trophy seats, 172 cup suspension, 172 cup wishbones, 197 cams, 182 exhaust manifold.

So basically IMHO whatever one you get you'll end up wanting parts off one of the other ones, as renault never got it quite right IMHO!

172 looks to much like a 1.2 for me.. Especially in brown/marroon which a lot seem to be. The dampeners on the trophy corrode and are stupid money.. Plus it doesn't feel a lot different.. Cups are borderline scary in the wet with no abs when the tyres start to get low. A ff 182 with cup packs makes the most sense as a daily.. One with trend lines and add turinis and it's perick.. All IMO of corse.

I think the 172 does look alot like a basic 1.2 clio but they seem to be easier on the bank account to buy than a 182 but im guessing theres a reason for that somewhere... :dapprove:
I much prefer the look of a 182 but as i do a fair ammount of miles each week i want something thats not going to be crippling heavey on fuel!

Ive owned a 182 it was a cracking car the only issues i had were the xenon lights which kept blowing and costing me a fortune and the exhaust is a pain in the ass and goes through hangars like no tomorrow so i'd say 172 FTW pal and there more throttle responsive aswell

Thanks for all the help! I think its def gonna have to be a 182 ;) Ive got 3.5k to blow on a nice one so... my search begins in the next month or so!

They all are very similar on fuel. Will do 35mpg plus if you take it easy.. And 32 with some spirited driving... As said 182s are more as they are newer...

We easily get 40mpg out of our 172 on a run, and thats got cams and an RS2

I live by Hay-on-Wye if u know where that is? :dapprove: Where abouts u from?

Im in hereford everyweekend and was talking to a mate last weekend who told me not to bother with a 172 as theyre rubbish on fuel compared to a 182 but thought a 2nd opinion would help.

Yes I know where hay is. I've just moved from Hereford to near Leominster/ Ludlow.. I wouldn't listen.. They are all the same engine.. Very little difference.. They have been the most economical performance cars I've owned by a long way..

Your mate clearly knows NOTHING about clios if he said that.

Incorrect as the 172 and 182, a pretty much identical

set a budget, and buy the best example you can afford, wether its a 172 or 182. Make sure it's had the belts done by a reputable specialist, or don't bother and move on to the next one

I never got 40 out of any of mine I don't think.. But there are no motorways around here and I was young and thrashed them back then.. I never got 20 out of the v6..

You wont really notice a difference in fuel between 172s/182s.

I bought a 172 because it was cheaper at the time.

Whatever you buy, make sure its had the belts done or make sure you have 600/700 ready to get them done!

what an old thread, i had posted a 182 all the way lol on the first page. well after growing up i would have a phase 1 172 all the way now

  work for BMW
All comes down to your budget imo!
If I was to buy another it would be a 172 as its such a similar car just much much cheaper. Probably even a phase1 because they have grown on me so much! Hard to find a good example now though
