Where is the oil going then? It isnt leaking!
Checked your header tank/water bottle?
If it ain't what spinksy said, it's leaking through either the piston rings or valve stem seals.
you checked everywhere around that engine for leaks? Crank seal on flywheel side , should see oil on the gearbox
Wheres the header tank?
I had the camshaft seal kit fitted, it was previously leaking there. Running 5w/40. No visible leaking at all.
Spinksy do theses run a coolant cooled oil cooler ? Block behind the oil filter with coolant pipes attached?
No mate, the oil filter only has a sensor attached,
the only coolant in the car runs through the block itself, through the rad, and back into header tank
Pipe to engine from header, pipe from engine to rad, one from rad to header
Well that puts my theory to shame lol
It's got to be burning it off somehow
Hi guys,
Coolant tank is clear as a bell. The oil breather pipe has some in, and the bit where it joins to another pipe then goes into engine. The nozzle on back of engine is a bit oily. Air filter box often gets some in but I cleaned it out 3 weeks ago and its still clear after good few hundred miles
No black smoke, nothing! Running sweet too. Heres a picture of the 3 way connector. This connects as a hose onto a nipple on back of engine.
Attached
Haha, yep One pipe goes into the air box, the other end of that small pipe goes into like a splitter which goes 2 other way, one other pipe goes to top left of the engine onto a nozzle and then the other goes below it then on the end of a nozzle which is also on the engine.
What could it be? A bit of oil gets in my air box and also in those breather pipe system. Worried!
whats the engine code? i'll go look it up for you.
is it swamping the airbox with oil or just a coating of the box?
a coating is normal, a puddle over a few weeks isnt !
lol i know its a D4F , i need the three digits after as they're all slightly different
Edit: ta, will go look it up, im sure those hoses is one for the case breather and some vac
Why it has a dual case breathers I dunno, odd design.
Those coil packs look a bits to change lol
if it was me , the engine would be out the bay for an inspection by now.
i cant see it being breather hoses or his airbox. you'd know about it if it was, the filter would be coated.
if there is no externall signs ( which i pressume he's looked hard enough lol ) then its got to be internal.
oil burns a blue colour not black. black is overfuel !
irrcc its one of three , head gasket - oil gallaries to cylinders , valve stem seals or piston rings.
i cannot think where else it can ' dissapier' without notice
i hope he dont thrash it , specially from cold
Tbf if it was piston rings etc there is a chance of some serious damage down the line...
Luke it is going to be a case of engine out and stripped down or get rid of the car (make buyer aware of fault)
i'd let it break first, engines are peanuts to buy for those.
he'll need a specialist to look at it tbh, or someone who is mechanicly minded.
i would have a gander but he's miles away
High usage on a 172 with no signs of leaks or burning - what's that point to?
