Good idea or not? Do they keep dirt out, or trap dirt in?

They keep dirt out generally. I use them in combination with ACF-50 or Corrosion block. Double protection.
You want to give everything a good clean after winter though or if you've accidently crashed into a field...

Or if you've been driving up and down the A14 which, due to the roadworks, has been covered with mud for the last 3 years.

Took mine off after a year or so the other month:

The covers were filthy, the shocks were lovely and clean😊. Mine are these ones on ebay: 154005908157

100% worth it.

As above, use some sort of grease/corrosion inhibitor to protect against trapped moisture and make sure that the bottom velcro of the sock doesn't sit on any important threads as, if anywhere was going to corrode, that's where it would be.

They won’t fit a damper with a spring perch like the OEM struts. They’re designed for 2.25” coilovers.
