GoPro Mount

I can’t find a good angle for my GoPro on trackdays using the cage. Especially with the mount I have at the moment as it either sits to high or to low.

I remember seeing a while ago there was a mount that went between the two bucket seats and mounted through the harness holes in either seat.

I’m not sure if this was custom made or it was an actual thing.

Any ideas?

What's your setup look like currently?

Cage mounts are usually pretty decent, then use the right settings to crop the view to Wide, Medium or Narrow.

Yeah, show us what you've got and what you're capturing at the moment.

There's not many GoPro mounting methods or tweaks I've not tried!

I've a box of adaptors for GoPro I can bring to CSF if needed.

This is a mates car a few years ago using my cage mount.

I’ll get some pics of where it’s mounted at the moment.

I have a hero 7 and it always looks really zoomed out and fish eyed.

Pic below of the view, as you can see it’s really high and the actually image itself is very high in contrast.

I have purchased a GoPro cage mount last night so just waiting for that to arrive

Ah 😂 I read your post wrong.

Didn’t realise there was a narrow view on there.
I will have a look through the settings in that case.

In the good old days GoPros had a 'spot meter' setting that meant it always adjusted exposure to the center point in the field of view. Worked really well for fixed in-car cameras.

Now, you get to choose by tapping the screen to set where that focal exposure spot is in the FOV.

The trouble with that is that, for the likes of us that have a fixed camera needing capture through a windscreen, doing that every time you want to record is a) a pain in the ar$e and b) often completely impossible if you're strapped into a seat and just want to press go.

As @JamesBryan says, the way around that is narrowing your field of view so that more of what you capture is just the view through the windscreen...then the automatic exposure tends to work. You don't get such a wide view of what you're up to in the cabin though, and the best/only way I've found of doing that is running a second camera.

What I tend to do is open the boot and press record so I can see the screen and that it is recording before I’m strapped in. So setting a focal exposure spot may be possible.

I’ve had it a few times where I’ve been out, thinking it is recording to end up with just a photo at the end 🤦‍♂️

I use a Hero 3 Black Edition so still has the old school spot metering.

Have you bought the official GoPro cage mount @LeeRS? That's the best one to use.

Yeah that's the old style.

The newer one I linked is a lot more solid and easier to setup tbh.

Having those different angled extensions will be handy though.

New mount turned up and I’ve tried a few angles with it.

What do you reckon to this?
Quality is poor as it’s a screenshot off my phone from the GoPro Quik app.

Not a great vid just a bit of road driving to find noises. But you can see the field of view on 1440/60 hz

Since my post above I’ve been and bought a hero 10 black.

The hero 7 white doesn’t allow any change of lens or white balance so I was fighting a losing battle.

Just charging the hero10 now and have had a look through how many settings there are.

Anybody using a hero10 black in car and has a preferred setting spec for them?

What mount is that?

I just remembered my cage is T45 so it is thinner, double check the clamp specs might not go round a standard steel one.

Have already got a clamp so just bought a 164mm extension bar.

I have got a half cage. I have a camera mount that goes in the middle of the cage hoop. I then have a 20mm extension bar that goes from the camera mount to the GoPro. The video angle is okay.

So I have the mounts I need and a new GoPro.

Going slightly off thread topic but what programs do you use following recording your day?

I’m thinking of getting Harry’s lap timer GP so I can overlay the track layout and speeds etc but not overly sure how this is done.

From what I’ve seen, I turn on GPS on the GoPro which then creates a file in the background.
I run Harry’s lap timer just as a lap timer at the track day and then somehow sync this with the GoPro footage.

Is there more to it that that or a simpler way?

Any advice / links to informative vids appreciated.

Race render is good. Just load your footage in itll calculate your lap times, speed, etc.

Nice little overlays as well.



There‘s a video here with multiple GoPro angles. I used to fix one at the front and one from the cage, just to the left of me. Then sync together using race render.

It’ll calculate it from GPS signal. It’ll give you all your lap times, plus pick out the fastest.

I use a set of GoPros but the GPS signal on them can sometimes be poor. Even when they have been outdoors doing laps every now and then they will lose the GPS signal and that then means you lose data about speed and track position. You can buy a separate GPS receiver to go in your car to accurately record your GPS data. Mobile phones are generally restricted to a GPS update rate of 1hz but a proper GPS receiver will give you an update rate of 25hz

My set up is:

1. Record video footage on a front facing GoPro and a read facing GoPro.
2. Use a RaceBox Mini S www.racebox.pro to capture the GPS data and lap times.
3. Once I have all the video and GPS data import it in to a RaceRender template - then sync up the two lots of video footage and the GPS footage.

RaceRender will then be able to display information like speed, track position and lap times depending on the display elements you are using. RaceRender will allow you to sync all of the your video and data and create a video that uses those separate sources of information. In the video I posted above the speed is recorded by the GPS receiver and does not take the speed measurement from the car. The timing is based on the GPS data. The bits of video footage have been synced so even though they started recording at different times. The rear footage reflects what is going on at the back of the car at the same time as what it going on at the front of the car. RaceRender also allows to you manipulate video so the rear footage is flipped horizontally to show what you would actually see in a rear view mirror. If wasn't flipped cars that approached from behind on the passenger side would appear in the video to be on the drivers side.

I started using Harrys Lap Timer but I found that it was bit cumbersome on an iPhone and the files it was generating were difficult to transfer due to their size.

I run RaceRender on a Mac and it works really well.

My only criticism of RaceRender is that the software is now getting old and I have not seen it updated for about 2 years now. I doubt it will ever be updated again.

Dont forget some tracks will want a secodary tether for the camera. I was caught out on this at Angelsey last time out so have bought soem metal cable things that loop around the bolt for the camera to mount and then around the view mirror.

Sorted with the mount now, ended up buying an extension like above and also bought a hero 10 black.

Next question regarding mounts…
I want to mount my iPhone so I can not record lap times.

Any recommendations on a mount / position for this in a 172?

Pricey but amazing, will need to also get a phone specific cradle to screw to this which they also do


I've got one on my E34, the girlfriend has one in her Focus and I had one in my old Octavia and they are perfect. No damage to the car, strong sturdy mounts that do not move or vibrate around.

I saw these but it’s just the leadtime on having the vehicle specific cradle made as I want it before CSF.
