Something's not right then. I put a threaded rod into No 1 spark plug hole, and turned the crankclockwise until No 1 piston was at it's topmost point.
The slots in the camshaft ends were nowhere near horizontal, and then to make matters worse, when I put the same threaded rod into the TDC pin...
When the TDC plug is removed, if I simply stick a long allen key into the hole, will the position of the crank (when it hits the makeshift TDC pin) depend on the length of the allen key, or not?
I suppose I could try it a couple of times with different length allen keys and answer my own...
so how far in does the tdc pin need to go? Is it a set length, or do I just push an allen key in as far as it will go, then turn the crank gently...
I've popped the camshaft oil seals off and can't get both cam slots horizontal, so I reckon the timing is off by about one tooth!
Yeah, everything except the paint usually (and i'll only farm that out if it's a large flat area like a bonnet)
I reckon I can get the whole lot done for under £600...;) we'll see
Yeah but buying a car without a s/h you'd have to factor in changing the cambelt anyway; and I don't pay dealer (or even scrap yard) prices for my parts, so it should still work out cheap...ish:rolleyes:
I've removed the inlet manifold and TB for ease of access to the LH end of the block, and found that the timing IS out by about 1 or 2 teeth...:dead:
that in itself would be enough with Renault parts and labour to make it a cat C...:dapprove:
simple answer, yes. a £30 non endorsable (no points) ticket.
Like others have said, a lot depends, just how small the numbers are and how polite you are when you get pulled...
...and they have to factor in extras like a like for like hire car for the duration of the repairs...
and if the cambelt has "hopped", a new engine, as the insurance company couldn't guarantee the repairs from simply realigning or even replacing the cambelt:S
so is there a way of switching the code off BEFORE you disconnect the battery? (I'm about to do that and I don't have my code..)
sorry for hijacking the thread
