You can remove the whole lot without the tools. You use an 8mm drift/drill bit to lock the crank in position.
But to time it all back up you need to have the tools or some other way to hold the cam pulleys and cams still while you tighten them up.
There is a guide on here and a Renault pdf...
Can you use the std timing slots on the 197 cams? I thought you needed to set them differently due to the different amount of advance you get between 197 and 1*2. Not 100% but I'd check before you go ahead.
197 head won't make a massive difference though.
Typical expectations for 1*2 sub 8k rpm from memory:
ITB - 190-200
ITB+421cams - 205-215
ITB+high comp pistons+422/423 cams+headwork - 225-240
More than that will require big expense.
197 has a better head with different pistons to suit. Various other minor differences.
But in a build like this it is the better head as a starting point that makes the difference.
Do they have a blog or something you can point me at? I didn't think they did racing.
The PMS and Ashford engines only revved to around 8k IIRC. To go over 8k with that valve train kit you'll need custom crank and rods too to reduce the piston speeds to something manageable.
The Ashford one
How does the catcams kit work Mark?
I have an old cam cover with holes cut in that I can use to dial them in but you still have the problem of getting the proper cam cover back on and to do that you need to remove the pulleys from the cams again IIRC. I was thinking I'd get an old horse shoe...
Nice work Tim. Hope you get the timing sorted without too much hassle.
I picked up my 250 today. Lovely car, not liking the mpg though compared to the 182.
The Friday after I saw you guys I did a trackday in the 182 and knackered the clutch in the first session (managed to rev match for the rest...
Tried that. It is sparking and all injectors are injecting lol.
I've tried a spare TDC sensor and checked continuity of plug back to ECU.
Tempted to just buy a Meg 250 RS, I was just trying to keep the 182 going for another 6 months.
I'm going to check the flywheel teeth tomorrow as I was having...
My 182 cut out cruising at 70 on a dual carriageway. One minute cruising fine, next nothing.
I've swapped the following from my race car:
Coil pack, leads and plugs
Fuel rail and injectors
Lambda sensor
TDC sensor and plug
Compression tested and all ok
It still won't start. It turns over on the...
My 182 has been developing a slight mis-fire for a while.
It only occurs (or is noticeable) at light throttle openings e.g. cruising at 30 in 3rd. Once you put your foot down a bit you cannot notice it e.g. 70 on motorway. But at idle when it is having a bad day it will put the flashing engine...
Why do you say solid lifters Dan? Catcams don't say they're needed for 422/423 and plenty on here have run engines with those cams using the hyd lifters.
Not seen some of those cam profiles before. Maybe catcams have updated their range. Probably worth talking to ED about it.

I think you need high comp pistons, or the std ones machining to have deeper pockets for the valves to go into for...
Normal for the wheels to be hot when you come in.
Have you changed the fluid recently?
You could have slightly sticky caliper pistons, meaning the pads still touch the disc enough to generate heat even when your foot i not on the pedal.
Could also be braking too much into the corners - if you...
The invoice looks reasonable for the work stated. Just a shame it turned out the way it did.
It is scary knowing who to trust with things like this - I've seen it several times over the years on here. People start off with a good rep but over time service goes down hill but people keep quiet...
172 cup does not have auto lights or wipers.
If it is stripped - you may have removed the thing that makes the noise, I'm not sure what does it. I know in my cup when it was stripped the indicator "click" was not present you could hear the relay though but it was much quieter. I can't remember...
