Got the car out of the garage this morning to wash off the grime from my last trip to Castle Combe -
Really please with the Interstate Race DNRT tyres ….. If you want some cheap road-legal, track tyres or List 1B competition tyres then you could do a lot worse than these. Interstate has...
As @Brushwood69 says above ... The Blue Book is the bible but it can be a bit daunting when you first read it. it's the best place to start. Any specific questions then just shout out .......
Ah... Don't confuse the championship with the event: some road going cars may enter the actual event without being entered in the championship.
Do you see what I mean? As an example there were 150 cars entered at Castle Combe but only about a dozen in the ASWMC championship, 10 in the TR...
That's interesting ... Just shows the difference across regions: 25 in 'Road Going Series Production Class up to 2.6 litre' last Saturday at Castle Combe - biggest class by miles. I think there was 8 in the equivalent "modified" class....
Might be cheaper to move house .... :-)
You will need soft or super-soft compound slicks for sprints / hillclimbs. Not cheap - I think you will need to budget about £800 for a new set of tyres ….. plus wheels, fitting, balancing etc.
Tyre choice is free in modified - I've just looked at pages 343 and 344 of the Blue Book and I cant see any reference to tyres...… so no restrictions.
If you don't want two sets of wheels and tyres (wet weather and dry) then I suggest you look at the list 1C tyres as a compromise. Kumho...
Pic of M100CUP at Castle Combe last Saturday - pinched from twitter :-)
Results sheet from Castle Combe (28th July 2018) - 25 in class which has to be some sort of record: nice grouping of the four Clios :-)
Sadly - I've just had to pull out of the Castle Hillclimb. My wife has had to go to stay with a friend in Devon … so I'm dog sitting in Dorset this weekend :-(
I've never done Portreath - I believe that's a Sprint on an airfield?
Over subscribed... And they were picking the best cars as they want a good show. Sadly I don't think an old Clio 182 fits the bill....
It'll probably rain anyway ..... :-)
I don't think they are random :) For the class I run in I am restricted to list 1b tyres ... About 15 different types of tyre. R888R, AR1, etc are the usual ones - a safe bet but expensive if you get through a couple of sets a year.
For sprinting and hillclimbing you really want the softest...
Yes, I've neglected the car and competitions for a while - house move and things just seemed to get in the way :) Anyway a few quick updates -
PMS Shifter fitted (from the ClioSport bulk buy) - really nice bit of kit:
Clay Pigeon Sprint (22nd July 2018) -
Not my finest hour...….. Old...
Tom .... Re Interstate Racing tyres: They are MSA list 1B this year but I've heard the manufacturers have gone bust - so they may not be on the approved list next year.
So tread carefully if you buying for next year :-)

Hi Tom ...looks good.
You make a good point about the Extreme VR2s..... very quick competition tyres. My only gripe about them is the price now: when I first imported a set direct from Poland over 3 years ago they were £65 per tyre inc vat, delivered, they are now £115 each - which...
Thanks for the reply .... sadly I'm nowhere near Notts. I'm going to take it to a local garage (MX5 Heaven) and ask them to put a code reader on it. I assume you can tell which 'air bag' circuit is playing up from the code.
My air bag light came on this morning..... which is strange as all airbags have been removed and replaced with resistors. I looked at the steering wheel resistors this afternoon - all looked ok. Tomorrow I'm going to look at the seat / side impact wiring and check the resistors there...
Hi N,
Just got back from a week in Cornwall looking at houses ... we stayed at a lovely cottage inTrelights near Port Isaac. Doombar beer in the local as well :)
It sounds like you've had an interesting time with your car ?
Helix clutch .... love it. The pedal is a fair bit heavier than...
Wiscombe Park Hillclimb - Saturday 28th April
My first event at Wiscombe this year - it was nice to be back and great to meet up with old friends and chat to all the new entrants.
Conditions were a bit mixed - and Wiscombe can be a very unforgiving hill in slippy conditions. There are no...
No - the NK version are also List 1B .... Extreme tyres published a letter of confirmation from the MSA on Facebook.
But I agree that its rather strange as they don't carry an EU tyre label .... you know the sort of label that grades rolling resistance, wet weather performance and noise levels.
Hi Rich - as you say the Extreme VR2s 'are the best tyre out there on the 1B list for Hillclimbing'. Its just that going from £85 per tyre to £115 is quite a hike. But I'm having second thoughts on the Maxsport RB5s as I know they are not as soft as the VR2s - guess I'll just pay up for a...
Thanks .... I've tried ZZRs and ZZSs on the Caterham - I have to say I wasn't that impressed. Perhaps they perform better on a heavier car?
My normal tyres in the Clio are Extreme VR2s remould in soft compound, usually about £85 delivered - but they only have new carcass option in the UK at...
I can't get my normal sprint tyres so I am thinking about trying Maxsport RB5 in soft compound. The RB5 size is slightly larger than my normal ones ... They are 205 x 55 x15 whilst my old ones (VR2s) are 195 x 50 x 15. My wheels are speedline 2118s with et 43.
I like the idea of a bit more...
Hi Rob
Yes..... but i'm not sure what the problem is: the only difference that I'm aware of is that mine is slightly lower than yours and I have some negative camber bolts. I'm on the standard 182 power steering rack.
The only other thing i can think of is could it be pure 'understeer'...
