The D80 is the old boy in the current Nikon line-up, so you won't notice a big step up in higher ISO performance (the new generation of Nikons blow virtually every other camera out of the water in terms of low light shooting, that will gradually filter through to 'our' level), it's mainly going...
If you want a relatively cheap (about £15) way of giving it a go, just get a Close Up filter for your kit lens. If nothing else it will teach you the basics of macro photography and give you an idea if you enjoy it or not. I've put a few examples in my Lulworth Cove thread.
Great stuff, seem to be getting the best out of your equipment, and your composition is spot on. I imagine you will find the transition to a DSLR pretty painless as you seem to have the basic skills sorted.
Got a couple of PMs about the close-up filter. It's actually a lens, just looks like a standard screw on filter, they come in several levels of 'power', usually +1, +2, +4, and essentially magnify your existing lens and allow you to focus much closer. Obviously you will also lose plenty of depth...
A couple from today to add, popped into the garden to feed my fish and noticed this beast just sat there, went back in, grabbed my camera, screwed the close-up filter on and it was still there when I got back. Wasn't in the best place (against the garage wall) but was nice to finally get close...
Congrats to AndyRS and halfpint for their joint victory in the last round with their images depicting 'Grafitti'
...controversial, but I've decided to sit on the fence and take both of their suggestions, so you have a choice this time around (or extra kudos if you can combine the...
A combo of ISO400 (which loses some quality), the kit lens (which isn't as sharp as my other lenses) and the time of day (midday in bright sunshine is the worst possible time to take pics)
That's my excuses anyway ;)
Great stuff, that Pink Flower shot is a beauty.
We left at 7:30 this morning and were there by 9, was amazing for the first hour or so, we were the only people in the Cove. Would love to stay around for sunset one day, hard to do anything spectacular in bright daylight.
Nope, just a bit of fun at weekends. Did get offered money for a few pics from this event but it's not my thing really, don't want to get into feeling I have to get good shots to make a bit of money, it would mean safer/dull shots and less fun.
As I'm 10-20less my 50mm has been ever-present when not shooting motorsport, but as I was packing my bag this morning I found something I've not used since January 2007...my kit lens. Apart from stupidly leaving my camera on ISO400 all day, it seemed to work well, nice and sharp, wide enough to...
Bit of an update, went through the next round etc but got a letter today saying I didn't make the final 6. Didn't do too badly though I guess, top 50 out of thousands of entries. Can't win 'em all :)
Pretty sure I got 400 miles out of a tank in my 172 Cup, could easily get 44+ mpg out of it without trying to hard (calculated properly at over 40mpg). Still going up to that 5k kick in the low gears, just being sensible when I got to traffic/built up areas etc.
Don't need to drive like a...
Sigma 10-20 all the way imo, that and a 50mm 1.8 gives me every single shot I've ever wanted when away somewhere...and importantly weighs hardly anything so doesn't get in the way of the trip too much. A lot of pros wouldn't even take 5 lenses on a travel expedition, aside from spending all your...
My gramp had an Audi Quattro Turbo, Audi rings down the side and everything and had silly low mileage, when he passed away I was learning to drive, my Nan wanted to give it to me but the insurance was out of the question (probably a good thing, at 17 it would have killed me), so she sold it and...
The in-laws had a standard Cortina, I was looking at the old photos yesterday which reminded me how much I love them (the rear light clusters, superb!)
They can be picked up pretty cheap and still look pretty cool.
