I have a 18-55 VR for sale... not that it helps you, but thought its worth mentioning lol!!

My choice would be the Nikon, and before it gets mentioned... yes it needs AF-S or HSM lenses but you are not limited on this as there are loads too choose from. The Nikon range also has a great reputation!! I would also go try them both TBH - some feel happier with the feel of the Canon...

Under budget too - enough spare cash for a case and card :)

There is also a few Sigma lenses that work which are not HSM, but APO. The 70-300 APO focuses.

Yes it will work, but that lens is pretty poor and I would highly recommend the 55-200 VR version instead. Its around £20 more but more than worth it. Its better built, better optics and has VR. I have used both and the difference is well justified in the price...

For that price you really only have 2 options, 400D and D40. Both are good, both will take fine pics, neither is better so go purchase!

Standard flash = fail!

Sb-400, 600 & 800 are all good choices.... depending on your needs! A lot of people may opt for a 600 or 800 and a 400 for times when wanting to go light. How often will you be using it and what for?
