Thanks guys, I'm so out of the times that I had to wiki what an SSD was!
I've just been pointed towards an affordable XPS system as another options for £820...
I'm in the market for a new machine, current one has been going for over 5 years now! I can't view HD video or HQ youtube video without it stuttering.
To give you an idea I currently have 1.5GB DDR RAM, an AMD Athlon 3200 and a GeForce 6800 GT.
Scan.co.uk has my attention with its buy now pay...
Excellent shots!
I'm planning a trip to Skomer at the moment with some coasteering over at St Davids, I think the puffins will be gone by mid August though? :(
Mind if I ask where you camped?
I happily snap away with an Ixus 75 I got my parents a few years ago. Not available anymore but at a quick glance the newer 95 is in budget and they have now thrown in optical IS. Surprisingly good at close up but don't expect big zoom. Has semi-manual controls if you want to override the camera...
Re: iPhone "must have" apps
I'm probably a little late on finding it but how amazing is DropBox!!! Badgered my mates to sign up and its so easy once set up to share anything we want, no memory sticks etc.
Re: OS4 software upgrade. Opinions?
Its ok, I wanted multi tasking but its kind of irritating now I have it! It feels like Apps have to re-load anyway, maybe they need updates, it doesn't feel like they are running in the background! Also having to manually close everything I open is annoying...
Apparently so, its so bad that my 17-55 has no dust and my 50mm f/1.8 & 85mm f/1.8s looked like someone with swine flue had sneezed in them!
As for saying the 17-55 f/2.8 is soft and unusable at f/2.8, that is laughable. It doesn't stand up against my primes stopped down to f/2.8 but its more...
15-85 would personally be on my shortlist. Although I'm very happy with the 17-55 f/2.8 IS, can't beat the speed and IS for general shooting. Although if the range of the kit lens isn't good enough, throw that idea out the window.
Slower, shorter, no IS, maybe built better, has a pretty red...
I've always refused weddings and I've probably got good enough kit. Somebody showed me there mates pics, they really regretted it, they were awful, maybe I should have agreed to do it! To much stress and responsibility, mates rates or not.
If you do go ahead, a powerful flash will be essential...
Look at the lenses you'll want to buy. Then since you know 1 Canon shooter and 1 Nikon shooter borrow them for the day!
The only thing I envy about Nikon is the 35mm f/1.8G.
Oh sorry did I say that, I meant ..
caN0n pwns l33t etc etc nik0n....lolz0rs
I've passed gearfaggorty, HDR, Dammit I suck and have just passed ooo found an old film camera, in fact its on my desk but its going back to the owner, as I'm now in the can't even be that bothered to use the DSLR let alone a film SLR stage but hovering above 40% skill level, how scarily true it...
I jumped from 350D to 40D and that was immensely nicer to use. If you don't want the bells and whistles of video, get the 50D over the probably soon be announced and way more expensive 60D.
If I shot Nikon the 35mm f/1.8 would be in my bag for sure. Although you could probably do with something in the 70-300 range.
Maybe the Sigma 70-300 APO DG or maybe splash out some more for the new OS version..

Although, as above, depends on...
Why not, most people aren't in a financial position to bother having both, so its a relevant test and plenty of people compare point-and-shoots to dSLRs, it has relevance, both take pictures but what ones more suitable for the user in question.
Was always going to be the same outcome, laptop...
The big question.
What version of the 18-55? If its the Mk1 non-IS, get the 18-200 IS, people are calling it a dog of a lens but for a first lens, I'm sure its stella, massive reach, convenient and with IS to boot.
Re: iPhone accessory must haves?
Any recommendations for a solar charger, 3gs compatible? Need one that doesn't have to be connected to the phone but can be charged then connected or connected via a cable.
Get her to find some example shots, then post them up here.
But I'm thinking at leaste one flash is going to be essential to give any real depth to the images.
dunganick, great shot, your technique + IS and you'd go even slower ;) but yup it sure is expensive combined with fast glass!
Back on topic, a couple of shots from longleat.. love the AF speed..
If your a Mac fan boy, it doesn't need flash apparently or usb or whatever. I'd need a lot of money burning a big hole in my pocket to buy a device that would need syncing to my main pc to work properly and be tied up with having to buy apple everything that isn't my iphone, think i'll...
